Anita M. Pruner

Anita M. Pruner, 90, of the Stevens Point Care Center, died there on Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2007.

Anita was born March 17, 1917, in Merrill, daughter of the late Gustav Carl and Bertha Schumacher Barz. After graduating from Merrill High School and Merrill Commercial College, she started her career in 1937 as secretary to former Merrill mayor, William Aubuchon. She later was a secretary in the Merrill office of the National Youth Administration, and then became a private secretary to the commanding officer of the tank aresenal in Detroit, Mich. during WWII. She later returned to Merrill and was secretary to Fromm Bros. Inc.

Anita married Sgt. LaVern Wiedenhoft in Merrill on Dec. 30, 1944, after he returned from New Guinea as a disabled veteran. The couple built a sporting goods store in 1948. LaVern died May 13, 1949. She continued to operate her business until selling it in 1952. Anita married Ronald L. Pruner, but later divorced. She began working for UW Stevens Point in 1965, retiring in 1983. She served six vice-chancellors for academic affairs. Anita was a member of St. John Lutheran Church in Merrill until 1962, then transferred to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Stevens Point. She was a member of the Classified Civil Service Retirement Club at UWSP and the Stevens Point Country Club.

Anita is survived by her niece Phyllis Jean Barz (Ben) Zink, Wausau; and close friends Ann and John Rock, Stevens Point. She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services were Saturday, Sept. 15, at St. John Lutheran Church, Merrill. Rev. Kelly Leary officiated. Burial was in Merrill Memorial Park. The Boston Funeral Home, Stevens Point, served the family. Memorials are established in her name for St. John Lutheran Church, Merrill; and St. Paul Lutheran Church, Stevens Point. Anita's family extends a heart felt "Thank You" to the Stevens Point Care Center for all their special care for Anita.
