Mabel V. Van Ert

Mabel Gerbig Van Ert, 96, of Gleason, died Wednesday, July 11, 2007. Mabel was in the Aspirus Hospice Care program in her Gleason home for the past four months. She was lovingly cared for by her son, friends, hospice workers and personal care givers.

Mabel was born Oct. 19, 1910, in the town of Birch. Her parents were Henry Gerbig (1860-1947) and Eva Waldberger Gerbig (1875-1912).

Mabel was a life-long resident of the towns of Birch and Russell. She married Harold Van Ert in 1933 and had a daughter Joyce Lorraine who preceded them in death in 1949. Son Donald Paul lives in Milwaukee. Mabel and Harold divorced in 1961. Mabel grew up and lived on dairy farms until 1961. Besides other employment, she worked at Weinbrenner Shoe Factory until her retirement at age 65. After that she spent many years as a foster grandparent at Lincoln Hills School. She did extensive gardening, canning, freezing, baking, cooking, sewing, knitting and home making until recent years. She was a lifelong member of Luther Memorial Lutheran Church in Gleason.

Besides her parents and daughter, Mabel was preceded in death by brothers Fred, Henry and Walter Gerbig and sister Minnie Gerbig Leamy.

Mabel was cremated. A memorial service was held at Luther Memorial Lutheran Church, Gleason, on Sunday, July 15. Rev. Steven Anderson officiated. A social was held at the church following the service for friends and family to share memories of Mabel. The family requests that memorial donations be made to HAVEN, Inc. at PO Box 32, Merrill. HAVEN, Inc. is a local shelter for women and children suffering from domestic abuse.

Mabel's cremains will be interred in the Gleason Cemetery next to her daughter Joyce Lorraine's grave in a private ceremony. The Waid Funeral Home, Merrill, is assisting the family and friends.
