Roy E. Gutenberger

Roy E. Gutenberger, 80, of Merrill, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2007, at his home under Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services and surrounded by his wife and family.

Born in Colby on Nov. 26, 1926, Roy was the son of the late Elroy and Anna Engel Gutenberger. He married Ethel Goessl on July 16, 1947, in Colby. She preceded him in death on May 17, 1977. On Oct. 11, 1997, he married Ann Pellant in Merrill. She survives.

Roy graduated from Colby High School. He then enlisted in the Army Air Corps, serving in the European Theater from 1945 to 1947. Roy was a retired carpenter and had owned and operated the West Side Bar in Merrill. Roy and his wife Ethel gave foster care to a number of troubled youth. He had been a fire warden for the town of Bradley. Roy was a past commander of VFW Post 1638, a 4-H leader, Christmas tree farmer, and past president of the West Side Business Association. He enjoyed working in the woods, fishing, hunting, camping, softball, square dancing, polka dancing, shooting pool, and especially spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Surviving are his wife Ann, Merrill; daughters Cindy Gutenberger, Wausau; and Judy (James) Robinson, Verona; sons Rodney (Carol), Merrill; Dennis (special friend Peggy Bodie), Littleton, Colo.; and Peter (special friend Karla Brown), Hagerstown, Md.; step-daughters Mary Behrendt, Wausau; and Nancy (Scott) Liske, Appleton; step-son Greg (special friend Ken Krueger) Koeferl, Marion; 13 grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a step-great-granddaughter. Also surviving are sisters Rita (Armand) Walsh, Marshfield; Eileen (Melvin) Bender, Mosinee; and Eldora (Gordon) Schuster, Marshfield; sister-in-law Grace Gutenberger, Colby; brother-in-law David Treutel, Colby, an aunt and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife Ethel, sister Sharon Treutel, and brother James.

A prayer service was Friday evening, Oct. 5, at the Waid Funeral Home, Merrill. Rev. Steve Russel officiated.
