Albert E. Schmidt

Albert E. Schmidt, 87, formerly of Merrill, died Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2007, at Heritage House in Portage.

Al was born May 4, 1920, in Fond du Lac, son of the late Martin C. and Myrtle Davis Schmidt. He married Marcella Gransee on Nov. 8, 1941, in Rosendale. She preceded him in death on May 26, 1973.

Al was a masonry superintendent for the International Bricklayers & Allied Craftsmen Local 11, and had worked throughout Wisconsin and the Midwest constructing schools, hospitals, university buildings and other commercial buildings. He assisted with the construction of Lincoln Hills School in Irma, and his last project was Jenny Towers in Merrill. Al was a member of St. Stephen's United Church of Christ, Merrill. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Fond du Lac Aerie 270 and Merrill Aerie 584. He served as Aerie president, Wisconsin State Eagles president,

Great Lakes President, was regional chair of all Eagles charities, and was a member of the Wisconsin Eagles State Hall of Fame. He enjoyed racing pigeons, and he liked to bowl, hunt and fish, being outdoors and traveling. Al was a member of the Westcott Gun Club and was a trap shooter. Al was a veteran of World War II, serving with the Army Air Force 98th Bomb Group, 415 Squadron in the European and African theaters. He received several citations and decorations, including an Oak Leaf Cluster and four Bronze Stars.

Survivors include his daughters Sharon (Larry) Hopper, Germantown; and Denise (Tom) Derey, Portage; daughter-in-law Sue Schmidt, Wauzeka; eight grandsons, two step-grandsons; six great-grandsons and seven great-granddaughters. Also surviving are sisters Norma Haefer, Indiana; and Delores Smith, Fond du Lac. He was preceded in death by his son Marty, great-grandson Tyler Hopper; and brother Jack Schmidt. Jack loved his family and was proud to be called their "Dad."

Funeral services were Saturday, Nov. 10, at St. Stephen's United Church of Christ, Merrill. Rev. John Eldred officiated. Burial will take place later in the month in Rosendale cemetery, Rosendale. The Merrill Eagles Club Aerie 584 paid tribute to Al before the service at the church. The Taylor & Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, assisted the family with arrangements.
