John K. Smith
John K. "Jack" Smith, 74, Medford, died Sunday, Nov. 25, at Memorial; Health Center, Medford, where he had been taken earlier by ambulance.
John was born in Merrill on May 4, 1933, son of the late Lloyd and La Verne Bjornberg Smith. He married Delores "Toppy" Wyland on July 24, 1954, at St. Francis Catholic church, Merrill. She survives.
John was raised by his maternal grandparents John and Helen Bjornberg and his mother and step-father August Kleinschmidt. He attended North Star Elementary School in Merrill and graduated from Merrill High School. After school he worked for various farmers in the Merrill area. He then entered the U.S. Marine Corps where he served for four years, stationed in California. He also graduated from the Marines Guided Missile Training Program. He returned to Wisconsin where he and Delores owned and operated dairy farms in Merrill, Iron Ridge and Medford during various intervals until his retirement in 1992. He also worked at various jobs while farming, most recently at Hurd Millwork in Medford for nine years. He enjoyed hunting and reading. John was a past president of the Local Carpenter's Union for eight years and also served on the Mid-West Carpenter's Union council for five years.
He is survived by his wife Delores "Toppy," Medford; children Kay Mackie (fiancee Rodney Newman), Wausau; John Jr. (Gloria), Oshkosh; Jean (Karl) Dehn, Perkinstown; Beth (Edwin) Chariton, Judy (John) Akey and Abe (Nathalie), all of Medford; Peter (Dawn), Ashland, Ill.; Mary (Jon) Heinemann, Medford; and Sally Smith, Old Town, Fla.; 25 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. He is further survived by his twin sister Joy (Edwin) Radtke, Fond du Lac.
A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, at the Hemer Funeral Home, Medford. Rev. Gerard Willger will officiate. Visitation will be Thursday from 2 p.m. to the hour of services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials that will be designated at a later date.
