Norman A. Wais

Norman A. Wais, 89, of 2100 E. Sixth St., Merrill, died Tuesday, Nov. 28, 2006, at Pine Crest Nursing Home, Merrill.

Norman was born Dec. 12, 1916, in Merrill, son of the late Otto and Marie Plautz Wais.

Norman graduated from Merrill Senior High School in 1935. During his high school days, Norman enjoyed operating his short wave radio. Upon graduation, he was employed in a print shop. Norman then served his country during World War II, from Sept. 19, 1942, until his honorable discharge on Dec. 3, 1945. He was a mechanic in the U.S. Army Air Corp, and was stationed in England, France and Germany. At the time of his retirement, Norman was a shipping clerk with the Weinbrenner Shoe Company in Merrill. He was a member of St. John Lutheran Church, Merrill. Norman enjoyed baseball, bowling and playing dart ball. Norman was an active member of Merrill VFW Post 1638. He was a longtime member of the post's Color Guard, participating in various parades and had served at numerous graveside military rites. He would also bartend at the club when it was opened to the public.

Survivors include his sisters Margaret Hypes, Mission Viejo, Calif., and Caroline Froelich, Merrill; brothers Arthur and Lorenz (June), both of Merrill; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by sisters Lucille Wais, Isabelle Wais and Evelyn Wais; and brother Gilbert.

Funeral services were Friday, Dec. 1, at the Taylor & Stine Funeral Home, Merrill. Rev. Alden J. Beversdorf officiated. Burial will be in Merrill Memorial Park, with graveside military rites conducted by VFW Post 1638, Merrill.
