John A. Reynolds

John A. "Red" Reynolds, 90, of 1500 O'Day St., Merrill, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2006, at Bell Tower Residence, Merrill.

John was born Dec. 30, 1915, in Merrill, son of the late John M. and Wilhelmina Danfield Reynolds. He married Jane M. Jung. Their marriage ended with her death on Jan. 16, 1981. He then married Virginia Semling Harding on Oct. 8, 1983. She survives.

John graduated from Merrill Senior High School in 1933 and also from Central State Teachers College, now known as UW Stevens Point. Thereafter, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1943 until his honorable discharge in 1946, and was stationed stateside in Florida. John joined Scott Advertising in Milwaukee in the mid 1950s, bought the business in 1960, and nurtured and grew the business until retiring as its chairman in the late 1980s. Over the years, John brought four of his family members into the business with him. He was president of the Milwaukee Advertising Club, 1953-54, and the annual golf outing was established during his tenure. He was secretary of the BPAA, 1969-70; was governor of the American Advertising Federation's Eighth District, 1956-57; served on the Board of Directors of the Graphic Arts & Advertising Guild, 1962-63; and served as president of the Guild, 1967-69. John was a member of the Board of Directors of "The Ranch" in Menomonee Falls. He received Milwaukee's Communicator of the Year Award in 1976; the Milwaukee Advertising Silver Medal in 1981; and was inducted into the Advertising Hall of Fame in 1989. He was an avid golfer, duck hunter and curler; and he was actively involved in the Western Advertising Golf Association, Ducks Unlimited, and the Wauwatosa Curling Club. John lettered in football in high school and became a member of both the Silver "M" and Golden "M" Clubs of Merrill. John enjoyed music, played alto saxophone in the high school marching band, and also several dance bands.

Survivors besides his wife Virginia, Merrill, include daughters Kathe Cavallo, Wauwatosa; Patti (Doug) Behrens, East Troy; and Jane (Mark) Harris, Wauwatosa; sons John "Mike", Wauwatosa; and Chuck (Karen), Mequon; step-daughters Patty (Dennis) Flannagan, Stevens Point; and Micki (Ed) Koth, Wausau; step-son Jay (Barb) Harding, Merrill; grandchildren Aaron and Ashley Reynolds and Jeff and Kevin Harris; two great-grandchildren; step-grandchildren Patti and James Koth, Beth (Todd) Pehlke, and Kyle and Kevin Harding; and two step-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sister Dorothy "Dort" Martin, Lansing, Mich.; brother Charles D., Pittsburgh, Pa.; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by daughter Marsha Reynolds, grandson Joshua Danfield Cavallo, sister Ellen Ruth Parker, and brothers-in-law Bernie Martin and Kayo Parker.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon today, Wednesday, Dec. 6, in Holy Cross Chapel at Bell Tower Residence, Merrill. Fr. Tom Zelinski, OFM Cap., will officiate. Visitation begins at 11 a.m. at Bell Tower Residence. A service for family and friends in the Milwaukee area will be held on Saturday, Dec. 9, followed by burial in St. Mary's Cemetery, Elm Grove, with graveside military rites. The Taylor & Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, is assisting the family with local arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the Reynolds Family has requested that memorials be directed to Bell Tower Residence, Merrill, or "The Ranch" located in Menomonee Falls.
