Florence M. Schewe
Florence M. Schewe, 94, of Merrill, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2006, at Bell Tower Residence, Merrill, under Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice and Bell Tower staff.
Born in Stevens Point on April 2, 1912, Florence was the daughter of the late Frank and Anna Glennon. She married Ralph Schewe on June 26, 1937, in Stevens Point. He survives.
Florence graduated from Stevens Point High School. She attended St. Mary's University at Notre Dame, and later graduated from Northwestern in Chicago, Ill. Following her education, Florence taught at UW Stevens Point. After her marriage, she stayed home to raise her children. Florence went back to teaching at the Lincoln County Normal School. She also taught at Holy Cross High School and then at Merrill High School for many years. Florence was an active member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Merrill. She was a member of the Good Samaritan Auxiliary, the Retired Teachers Association, and active in the Girl Scouts program. Florence was also active in the AFS program, the Social Topics Club, and the Study Club. She enjoyed playing bridge, doing arts and crafts, and helping others. Florence was a social person who loved being with people. Over the years Florence taught and encouraged many students with their speech, forensics and communications skills. In her later years, Florence enjoyed entertaining her friends and family. She especially enjoyed being a part of her grandchildren's lives, and being involved in their activities. Florence and her husband Ralph enjoyed traveling, playing golf, and being together at their home on Lake Pesobic.
Survivors include her husband Ralph, Merrill; daughters Mary Ann (Ken) Van Der Geest and Betty (Mark) Weix, both of Merrill; Jane (Jim) Pehlke, Annapolis, Md.; Barbara (Ralph) Mansavage, Stevens Point; and Nancy (Ron) Cournaya, Geneva, Ill.; sons Richard (Susan), Bella Vista, Ark.; and John, Merrill; 32 grandchildren, 63 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by baby son James, son-in-law David Buehler; brother Kenneth Glennon; grandchildren Michael and Catherine, and great-grandson Christopher.
Funeral services were Tuesday, Dec. 5, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Merrill. Rev. James Horath officiated. Burial was in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, Merrill. The Waid Funeral Home, Merrill, assisted the family.
