Lorenz F. Wais
Lorenz F. 'Tarz' Wais, 85, of 911 E. Sixth St., Merrill, died Sunday, Dec. 3, 2006, at Pine Crest Nursing Home, Merrill.
Tarz was born Aug. 13, 1921, in Merrill, son of the late Otto and Marie Plautz Wais. He married June Brandenburg on Nov. 1, 1947, in Merrill. She survives.
Tarz served his country during World War II, from Oct. 14, 1940, until his honorable discharge on July 7, 1945. He was in the 128th Field Artillery Battalion of the 32nd Division, and was stationed in the South Pacific for three years. Tarz retired in 1985 after working at the former Ward Paper Company for 40 years. He was a lifelong member of St. John Lutheran Church in Merrill. Tarz was an avid 'Cubs' fan, and also enjoyed watching the 'Brewers' and 'Packers' and playing cribbage. Most of all, Tarz enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors besides his wife June, Merrill, include his daughter Kathy (Jim) Sheridan, Merrill; sons Steve (Diane) and John (Barb), both of Merrill; and Larry, Delafield; grandchildren Meghan (Thomas) Barker, Erin (Darrin) Kuehn, Molly Sheridan, Brianne Sheridan, Amy (Jon) Parkes and Jeff (BreAnne) Wais; and great-grandchildren Jackson and Julian Kuehn. Also surviving are sisters Margaret Hypes, Mission Viejo, Calif.; and Caroline Froehlich, Merrill; and brother Arthur, Merrill. He was preceded in death by sisters Lucille Wais, Isabelle Wais and Evelyn Wais and brothers Gilbert and Norman.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 7, at St. John Lutheran Church, Merrill. Rev. Kelly Leary will officiate. Burial will be in Merrill Memorial Park with graveside military rites conducted by VFW Post 1638, Merrill. Visitation will be this evening, Dec. 6, 4-8 p.m., at the Taylor & Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, and at the church on Thursday from 9 a.m. to the hour of services.
