Walter E. Byker
Walter Edward Byker, 93, of Bella Vista, Ark., formerly of Merrill, died Sunday, Oct. 15, 2006, at Circle of Life Hospice Home in Springdale, Ark.
Walter was born May 1, 1913, in Chicago, Ill., to Michael and Mary Broniarcsyk Bychawski. He married Nora Betty Nelson of Duluth, Minn., on Dec. 31, 1938.
Walter retired from the Schwinn Bicycle Company of Chicago, Ill., in 1973 and moved to Merrill where he lived for 33 years. He was active in the Merrill Optimist Club and became a Life Time Member. He was also awarded the Friend of Youth Award, and spent years coaching elementary baseball and sponsored the monthly Optimist Youth of the Month Award. He enjoyed fishing, card playing and gardening.
Surviving are Nora, his wife of 68 years, who resides at Autumn Place Assisted Living in Pea Ridge, Ark.; sons Stuart M. (Chere),Bloomingdale, Ill.; and Thomas C., Norcross, Ga.; daughter Christine S. (John) Ollhoff, Bella Vista, Ark.; grandchildren Jeffrey (Marie) Byker, Glendale Heights, Ill.; David (Gail) Byker, Gurnee, Ill.; Bethany Vanderbrink, Bloomingdale, Ill.; Peter Byker (Gail), Crystal Lake, Ill.; Amy (Manny) Garcia, Bloomington, Ill.; Dennis (Angela) Schmidt, Oregon, Wis.; Sandra Schmidt, Richfield, Minn.; and Mark (Vicki) Schmidt, Minneapolis, Minn.; and 14 great-grandchildren.
Graveside memorial services will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, at Merrill Memorial Park, Merrill. Arrangements are by the Bella Vista Funeral Home & Crematory, 2258 Forest Hill Blvd., Bella Vista, AR 72715. Memorials may be made to Circle of Life Hospice, 910 Jones Rd., Springdale, AR 72762.
