SPC Grant A. Dampier
Spc. Grant Allen Dampier, 25, of Merrill, died Monday, May 15, 2006, in Balad, Iraq.
Born in Wisconsin Rapids on July 8, 1980, Grant was the son of Richard Dampier and Karen Sparks Goulee. He married Heidi Lawrie on April 1, 2005, in Tomahawk. She survives.
Grant attended and graduated from Merrill High School in 1999. He was a member of the wrestling team. After high school, Grant worked for Marathon Electric in Wausau. He joined the Army in September 2004 and was deployed to Iraq in December 2005. He enjoyed fishing and watching the Green Bay Packers. Grant also liked truck racing and his car. But most of all he loved his wife Heidi and his little girls Alexis, Starr and Kylee. He was very proud of them and wanted them to be proud of him. He will be very sadly missed by his family.
Surviving are his wife Heidi, Merrill; children Alexis, 5; Starr, 4; and Kylee, 1; his mother and step-father Karen (Pat) Goulee, Merrill; brother Jamie Dampier and sister Rae Ann Dampier, both of Merrill; half-brothers Sky Sparks, Merrill; Logan Dampier, Wisconsin Rapids; and Zachary, Christopher and Phillip, all of Wisconsin Rapids. Also surviving are his step-sister BryAnne Fish, Garnavillo, Iowa; his father and step-mother Richard (Gwen) Dampier, Mosinee; paternal grandmother Ramona Dampier, Nekoosa; maternal grandparents William and Velma Sparks; mother-in-law Dawn Lawrie, Merrill; father-in-law Robert Hoffman Sr., Merrill; sister-in-law Jessie Lawrie, Memphis, Tenn.; brother-in-law Robert Hoffman Jr., Merrill; special cousin Justin Peterson, Merrill; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather.
Funeral services were Friday, May 26, at the Waid Funeral Home Chapel, Merrill. Michele Rein officiated. Burial was in Merrill Memorial Park. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be given to the Dampier children trust fund.
