Monahan, Douglas James

Douglas James Monahan, 87, of Castle Rock, passed away on October 16, 2004 at the Hospice Care Center. He was born on February 21, 1917 in Hartford, Wisconsin, the son of Laverne and Iva (Noel) Monahan. His family moved to Merrill, Wisconsin where he lived until 1937. He graduated from high school in Merrill in 1935 and then moved to Rhinelander, Wisconsin. In 1938 her married Jeannette O'Brien in Rhinelander, she preceded him in death on July 13, 1994. He and Jeannette lived in Rhinelander until 1956 when their family moved to Longview for the start up of the R-W Paper Co. Mr. Monahan retired from R-W Paper Company in 1979 after working 38 years in the Paper Industry.

He served in the Army during WWII. Mr. Monahan was a member of the Longview American Legion Post 155 and a member of the St. Mary Catholic Church in Castle Rock. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, stamp and coin collecting and his retirement. He cherished his family.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Judy & Skip Martin of Castle Rock; son and daughter-in-law, James "Mike" & Jacquie Monahan of Longview; sister, Phyllis Swedish of Elm Grove, Wisconsin; two granddaughters, Vicki Brigden of Longview and Kim Butts of New York; great grandson, Austin Brigden of Longview and great granddaughter Anna Brigden of Longview. He is also survived by nieces and nephews in Wisconsin.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 22, 2004 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Castle Rock with Father Tim Ilgen officiating.

Rosary will be at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 21, 2004 at St. Mary's Church. Private entombment will take place at Longview Memorial Park.
