Shirley J. Alft

Shirley J. Alft, 81, of 1007 E. Seventh St., Merrill, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2004, at her home.

Shirley was born June 20, 1923, in Green Bay, daughter of the late Evan and Minnie (Morganroth) Hoff Sr. Shirley's family moved to Tomahawk soon after she was born.

Shirley married Robert Alft Sr. on Aug. 30, 1947, in Tomahawk. He survives. Shirley was a member of St. Stephen's United Church of Christ, Merrill, where she was involved in the Mission Circle. Shirley also was involved in the national organization "Another Mother for Peace." She was a Girl Scout leader, participated in the annual Crop Walk with her husband and volunteered with Meals on Wheels. In 1980 she received the "Garden of the Month" award from the Park Valley Garden Club. Her passion was gardening and getting people involved in gardening by sharing her plants and ideas with them. Everyone was always impressed with her back yard garden.

Survivors include her husband, Robert D. Alft Sr. of Merrill; one daughter, Julie Faye Alft (Thomas Mulqueen), Schofield; one son, Robert D. Alft Jr. (Margaret LaFond), Voorheesville, N.Y.; three grandchildren, Nathan Alft-LaFond, Thomas Alft-LaFond and Rory Alft-LaFond; two step-grandsons, David Mulqueen and Thomas Mulqueen Jr.; her sister and lifelong friend, Vera Erickson, Merrill; one brother, Evan Hoff Jr., Tomahawk; many nieces and nephews; and her special gardening friend and neighbor, Carly Ament. Shirley was preceded in death by one sister, Marion Whiting, and two brothers, Melvin Hoff and Howard Hoff.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, at St. Stephen's United Church of Christ, Merrill. The Rev. Earl Eckhart will officiate. The family will receive friends at St. Stephen's United Church of Christ beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The Taylor-Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, is assisting the family with arrangements.
