Jess Holt

IRON RIVER - Jess D. Holt, 72, of 581 Bates-Amasa Road, Iron River, died Monday, Nov. 27, 2000, at Crystal Manor Nursing Home in Crystal Falls.

He was born May 8, 1928, in Merrill, Wis., son of the late Carl and Dorothy (Jourdan) Holt. He graduated from high school and then entered the U.S. Navy.

He taught crash fire fighting while stationed in Oslo, Norway during World War II. Following his honorable discharge, he studied agriculture at the University of Wisconsin.

Mr. Holt moved to West Virginia and then returned to Wisconsin. He had been employed as a mechanic for Sharon Chevrolet and Cadillac in Milwaukee for several years. He also worked for a logger. He moved to Eagle River and in 1987 moved to the Iron River area.

He married the former Catherine Becraft in 1972. Mr. Holt was a member of the Reino Post 21 of the American Legion and the Ottawa Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). He had also been a former member of the Eagle River VFW. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Sharper.

He leaves his wife, Catherine; a son, David Holt of Iron River; a daughter, Dawn Holt of Iron River; three stepsons, Ernest and Joseph Frayer of Sewanee, Tenn. and Matt Frayer of Eagle River, Wis.; a brother, Jerry (Meta) Holt of Dalzelle, S.C.; a sister, Joyce (Floyd) Albright of Gleason, Wis.; a granddaughter, Mackenzie of Iron River; four step-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no visitation.

A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Langenberg Funeral Home - Stambaugh Chapel. The Rev. Fr. Otto Sartorelli, pastor of St. Cecelia Catholic Church in Caspian, will officiate. Members of the West Side Veterans Council will accord military rites at the funeral service.

The Langenberg Funeral Home - Stambaugh Chapel is in charge of funeral arrangements.
