Herbert R. Leder

Herbert R. Leder, 82, of W283 First Ave., Gleason, died Saturday, Dec. 23, 2006, at Good Samaritan Health Center, Merrill.

He was born May 27, 1924, in North Saint Paul, Minn., son of the late Fred and Helen (Hochschulz) Leder. Herbert married Mary Jane Schoen on Nov. 12, 1955, in Caroline, Wis. She survives.

Herbert served his country during the beginning of the Korean War. He stayed state-side with the U.S. Army. Herbert was a carpenter and dairy farmer. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Wausau, and he was a member of the Caroline American Legion.

At the age of 13, Herbert taught himself how to make maple syrup. He would stay in the syrup shack through the night and go to school during the day. He truly enjoyed the time he spent producing maple syrup and made this a lifelong hobby. Hebert also enjoyed playing the accordion with The Bindertwine Band. Herbert also taught himself to play other musical instruments, as well. Herbert will be remembered by his family as a storyteller and a fantastic berry picker. Herbert and his wife, Mary, made several trips a year to Berrien Springs, Mich., to pick up cherries, peaches and other fruits. For this reason, Herbert will also be remembered by his family as "The Fruit Man."

Survivors besides his wife, Mary Jane Leder, of Gleason; include two daughters, Nancy Jane (Dick) Camara, of Trussville, Ala., and Carol Ann (Keith) Acker, of Newark, Del.; four sons, David Alan (Laurel) Leder, of Scandinavia, Wis., Dr. Robert Roy (Penny) Leder, of Bear Creek, Wis., Mark Jon Leder, of Gleason, and Karl Fred (Sandra) Leder, of Gurnee, Ill.; 10 grandchildren, Heidi, Abigail, Jarrod, Casey, Richard, Justin, Caleb, Corban, Issac and Brett; and one sister, Frieda Lee Blanchard, of Ooltewah, Tenn.

Herbert was preceded in death by one daughter, Debra Kay Leder; and by three brothers, George, Ted and Alfred.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006, at the Taylor & Stine Funeral Home, Merrill. The Rev. Bob Mills will officiate. Burial will be in Gleason Cemetery, town of Russell, with graveside military rites conducted by the V.F.W. Post 1638, Merrill. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Tuesday, and again after 9 a.m. Wednesday, all at the Taylor & Stine Funeral Home, Merrill.
