David J. Henkelman

WAUSAU, Wis. - David J. Henkelman, 71, of Wausau died Monday, Nov. 17, 2003, in St. James Hospital, Olympia Fields, Ill.

David was born on Feb. 18, 1932, in Wausau to the late John and Dora (Weden) Henkelman. He married Ruth Fromfeld on Oct. 19, 1957, in Wausau. David worked as a construction worker, semi-truck driver and crane operator for Wausau Homes. Prior to his retirement he worked for Wausau Area Transit System as a bus driver.

He enlisted in the Air Force from 1949 to 1953 during the Korean Conflict. He had training at Sheppard Air Force Base and A & E School. David was a B-29 specialist and R-3350 engine repair specialist. He was a life member of the American Legion post 10, served as a member of the honor guard, life member of Burtonwood Association, life member of NRA, member of civil war round table of Marathon County, and used his golden age passport on extensive travels throughout the U.S..

David was a birdwatcher, very outgoing, loved the outdoors, including; fishing, hunting, and camping. His passions were history, family, nascar, packers, traveling, civil war battlefields, vegetable gardening and READING.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth; children, Denise Brown, Tomahawk, Christine (Ron) Duranceau, Irma, John (Pamela) Henkelman, La Crosse; eight grandchildren, Tina Lewis, Gus Berghahn, Richard Berghahn, Danielle Duranceau, Shelby Henkelman, Zachary Henkelman, Scott Krueger, Samantha Velasques; one great-grandchild, Jeffery Velasques; sisters, Mavis (Gordon) Schubring and Linda Henkelman; brother, Randolph (Donna) Henkelman; sister in law, Shirley Henkelman.

Preceded in death by brother, Clifford Henkelman.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 24, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Wausau. The Rev. Sarah Nehring will be officiating. Burial will be in Springbrook Cemetery, Town of Pine River.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until the time of services at the church. Memorials preferred to Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.
