Dorothy G. Nelson

Dorothy Grace (Young) Nelson, 84, of 1500 O'Day St., Merrill, died Monday, June 20, 2005, surrounded by her children and under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services. Dorothy was born May 29, 1921, in Merrill, daughter of the late Raymond and Louise (Fischer) Young. She married her high school sweetheart Arlo Reed Nelson April 21, 1945, in Merrill. He preceded her in death July 15, 2001.

Dorothy was a secretary for the former Merrill Vocational School, Normal Teachers College, and Holy Cross Junior College. She was also parish secretary for St. Robert Bellarmine Catholic Church in Merrill.

Dorothy was a member of the Merrill Lionettes. She was also an active volunteer in her parish and a member of St. Robert Altar Society.

She and Arlo routinely visited "shut-ins" after Mass on Sundays. A pastime that "Dot" and Arlo truly enjoyed was dancing. Dorothy's favorite retreat was the family cottage on Lake Alexander.

Survivors include two daughters, Christine (Allan) Schult of Merrill, and Susan (Bruce) Van Sleet of Merrill; one son, David (Dawn) Nelson of Merrill; 12 grandchildren, Jeanne Erickson, Laura Tesch, Paul Van Sleet, David Schult, Donovan Van Sleet, John Van Sleet, Kirsten Nelson, Erika Nelson, Robert Nelson, Sara Schult, Rebecca Nelson and Kathryn Nelson; 11 great-grandchildren, Dominique Van Sleet, Benjamin Tesch, Brooke Tesch, Gretchen Erickson, Kendall Erickson, Reed Schult, Hailey Schult, Nicholas Van Sleet, Annaliese Erickson, Davin Van Sleet and Sean Van Sleet; and one sister, Mary Lou Quinn of Fairfield Glade, Tenn.

Dorothy was preceded in death by two sisters, Mildred Bredael and Lucille Urbany; and two brothers, Raymond Young Jr. and Charles Young.

The funeral Mass will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, June 23, 2005, at Holy Cross Chapel at Bell Tower Residence, Merrill. The Rev. James Horath will officiate. Burial will take place at a later date in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery, Merrill.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Taylor & Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, and after 1 p.m. Thursday at Holy Cross Chapel at Bell Tower Residence, Merrill.
