Les Kanitz

Leslie E. "Les" Kanitz, age 87, of 201 N. State St., Merrill, died Monday, March 6, 2006, at Good Samaritan Health Center, Merrill.

Les was born May 13, 1918, in Merrill, son of the late Gustave and Anna (Wendland) Kanitz. He married Dorothy Oknewski on Oct. 31, 1942, in Merrill. She survives.

Les was the owner and operator of the former "Mid City Service" in Merrill. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Merrill. He enjoyed spending time in the woods on his property, where he would feed and care for the tamed deer. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, cutting firewood and spending time with all his grandchildren. Les served in the U.S. Army from 1945 until 1946, and was a prison guard at the Jefferson Barracks near St. Louis.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Kanitz, Merrill; one daughter, Lorraine Koch, Racine; three sons, Allan (Julie) Kanitz, Merrill, Dale (Rose) Kanitz, Rib Mountain, and Daniel (Dawn) Kanitz, Merrill; five grandchildren, Kimberly, Nicole, Karla, Alexis and Erin; six great-grandchildren, Brandyn, Bailee, Benjamin, Bryce, Madison and Kendall; two stepgrandchildren, Jeremy and Sarah; two stepgreat-grandchildren, Emma and Anna; and one brother, Lylas Kanitz, Merrill. Les was preceded in death by two sisters, Alice Kanitz and Eleanor Schulz; and two brothers, Alvin "Butch" Kanitz and Elmer Kanitz.

The funeral will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 9, 2006, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Merrill. The Rev. David Klemm will officiate. Burial will be in Merrill Memorial Park, where graveside military rites will be conducted by the VFW Post 1638 Honor Guard. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Taylor-Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, and after 9 a.m. Thursday at the church.
