Alfred C. Roman

Alfred "Butch" C. Roman, 81, of Merrill died Friday, March 4, 2005, under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services at Good Samaritan Health Center, Wausau.

He was born July 8, 1923, in Merrill, son of the late William and Pauline (Kleinberg) Roman. He married Mildred Mosser on July 15, 1944, at St. Francis Rectory in Merrill. They were married for 60 years.

Butch had worked as a body shop repair and painter for Otto Nienow and later for Chevrolet Motors. He opened his body repair and paint shop in 1957, which he named Al's Body Shop. Butch had bad luck in 1960 when the shop he was renting burned. He then built his own body and paint shop, and then nine years later, it was gutted by fire. He and his wife rebuilt and started again. Butch operated his shop for 23 years. His three sons and his grandsons also worked with him in the body shop. Butch retired in 1989 when his son, Clark and his wife Kelly, bought the business.

Butch was a member of the Knights of Columbus 1133 of Merrill. He belonged to the Third and Fourth Degree. He was Grand Knight in 1985-86. He was a very active member of the Knights for many years. Butch was a past member of the Eagles. He snowplowed for people and friends for many years. He was a private airplane pilot for several years, which he enjoyed very much. He took many people and friends up for their first ride in an airplane. Butch was an outdoor sportsman. He loved fishing, hunting and snowmobiling. He enjoyed going to the trailer at Boulder Junction, which was parked at Camp Holiday Trailer Park. Butch and his wife, Millie, went fishing in the lakes in the north and enjoyed many catches. He waited for Tuesdays to come, as he enjoyed going to the Senior Center to play cards. Butch was always there to tell jokes or stories to anyone who would listen. He was a very happy-go-lucky person.

Butch and Millie toured most of the western states. They also enjoyed a cruise, toured Alaska, Hawaii, Bahamas and Spain. Butch always looked for Christmas to come, as he was surrounded by his family. He enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much. He really loved his first great-granddaughter, as she is the only girl in three generations.

The Knights of Columbus will have a short service at 7:30 p.m. on Monday at Waid Funeral Home, Merrill. Memorials may be sent to the St. Francis Building Fund.

He is survived by his wife Mildred Roman. His three sons, Dale A. (Sandy) Roman, their children, grandson, Todd A. (Tammy) Roman, their children, great-grandchildren, Molly Kate and Nicholas A. Roman. Grandsons, Chris A. (Corene) Roman; son, Bruce A. (Sandy) Roman, their children, grandson Bruce A. (Amanda) Roman, grandson, Bill A. Roman; son, Clark A. (Kelly) Roman, their child, grandson, Jesse A. Roman. One sister, Pauline (Elmer) Nienow; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Merrill. The Rev. James Horath will officiate. Burial will be in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, Merrill. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and will begin again at 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., all at Waid Funeral Home.
