Gordon E. Pophal, 73, of Eau Claire, died Monday, February 7, 2005, at Luther Hospital in Eau Claire.

Gordon was born December 24, 1931, in Merrill, son of the late Emil and Myrtle Malluege Pophal. He married Jean Kretlow in Merrill on July 11, 1953. She survives.

Gordon graduated from Merrill High School in 1950. He served in the U. S. Army from 1953 until 1955, and was stationed in Japan. He was employed with Wisconsin Bell for 35 years, both in Merrill and Eau Claire, and retired in 1992. Gordon was an avid golfer and Packer fan.

Survivors besides his wife of 51 years include daughters Patty (Bob) Murphy, Wylie, Texas; Jane (Ed) Slifer, Eau Claire; and Virginia (Rohm) Bloedorn, Delafield; son Matthew (Kathi), Green Bay; grandchildren Rob and Matt Murphy, Jennifer (Darren) Benson; Michelle and Nicole Bloedorn, and Brittany, Erika and Becca Pophal; great-grandsons Eric and Nathan Benson; and nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by brothers Milton and Raymond.

A visitation and prayer service was held Friday, February 11, at the Prock Funeral Home in Eau Claire. A visitation was held Saturday, February 12, at the Taylor & Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, followed by a graveside service at Merrill Memorial Park. Rev. Earl Eckhart officiated. Graveside military rites were conducted by the Merrill VFW Post 1638, Color Guard.
