Elmer W. Hinke, 91, of Merrill, died Thursday, March 17, 2005, at Sacred Heart Hospital, Tomahawk.

Elmer was born August 12, 1913, in Merrill, son of the late William and Hattie Kanitz Hinke. He married Elaine M. Kutil on February 22, 1938, in Ironwood, Mich. She survives.

Elmer worked at the former Ward Paper Company in Merrill for 39 years. Prior to the paper mill, he worked at the CCC Camp in Manitowish Waters. He was a graduate of Merrill High School and was a charter member of the Merrill 'Silver M' Club. Elmer was a volunteer for the Merrill Senior Center. He had been a CCD assistant at St. Francis Catholic Church. He enjoyed golfing, biking, bowling and leisure activities at the Senior Center.

Survivors besides his wife Elaine of Merrill include daughter Carole (Jim) Kobe, Pewaukee, sons Bill (Jeanne), Marathon City; Jim (Shirley), Phillips; Dave, Merrill; and Dan, Grafton; and grandchildren Jeff Hinke, Rothschild; Veronica Hinke, Chicago, Ill.; Carrie (Brandon) Quinn, DePere; Jeremy Hinke, Phillips; and Patrick and Greg Hinke, both of Lakeside, Calif. Brother Milfred preceded Elmer in death.

Funeral services were Tuesday, March 22, at St. Francis Catholic Church, Merrill. Rev. Joseph Kleinheinz officiated. Burial was in St. Francis Catholic Cemetery, Merrill. The Taylor and Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, served the family.
