Lorraine H. Schmidt, 84, formerly of 1304 E. Eighth St., Merrill, died Saturday, May 28, 2005, at Woodland Court Elder Services, Merrill.

Lorraine was born September 18, 1920, in Tomahawk, daughter of the late Oscar and Leona Behrens Hartell. She married Raymond Becker on May 29, 1947. He preceded her in death in 1969. She then married Albert E. Schmidt on May 26, 1973. He survives.

Lorraine earned her bachelor's degree from Central State Teacher's College in 1947 and her master's degree in science in 1963 from US Madison. Lorraine was an elementary teacher for Merrill Schools, 1945-1967, and a teaching principal at Washington School, 1962-1967. She became a school psychologist for the Merrill area Public Schools in 1967 until retiring in 1985. Lorraine was a member of various organizations during her teaching career, including: Merrill Education Assoc., Council for Exceptional Children, School Psychologist Assoc., and the Elementary Principals Assoc. She was also very active in the Eagle's Auxiliary. A few of Lorraine's many achievements with the Eagle's Auxiliary include: being elected to the Hall of Fame in 1995, serving as State President, 1988-1989, and serving as the Great Lakes Regional President, 1990-1991. She and her husband Albert enjoyed traveling. She also enjoyed golfing.

Survivors besides her husband Albert, of Merrill, include step daughters Sharon (Larry) Hopper, Germantown; and Denise (Tom) Derey, Portage; step daughter-in-law Sue Schmidt, Wauzeka; eight step-grandchildren and nine step great-grandchildren. Also surviving are sister Mae June (Joseph W.) Schneider, Merrill; niece Jolene Leopold; and nephews Thomas J. Schneider, Dennis J. Schneider, Steven Schneider, Jeffrey Schneider and Robin Schneider. She was preceded in death by step son Marty Schmidt, sister Mildred Becker, step great-grandchild Tyler Hopper, and nephew Lance Becker.

Funeral services were Thursday, June 2, at St. Stephen's United Church of Christ, Merrill. Rev. Earl Eckhart officiated. The Taylor and Stine Funeral Home, Merrill, served the family.
