Richard Douglas Benkowski, 81, of Merrill, died Wednesday, September 21, 2005, at Pine Crest Nursing Home, Merrill.

Born April 20, 1924, in Wisconsin Rapids, Richard was the son of the late Benjamin Benkowski and Cecil Wyant Patterson. He married Lois Steinbeck in Merrill on June 21, 1952. She preceded him in death on December 22, 1999. Richard attended the Gleason State Graded School in Gleason. He owned and operated a dairy farm in the Gleason area along with his wife and brother Calvin Patterson. Richard enjoyed ice skating and roller skating in his youth. Richard will be remembered for his kindness and friendly personality.

He is survived by his half-brother Calvin Patterson, Athens; a step-niece; two step-nephews; cousins; and several friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Lois.

Funeral services were Monday, September 25, at the Waid Funeral Home Chapel. Michelle Rein officiated. Burial was in Merrill Memorial Park.
