Lee R. Darnell, 85, of Merrill, died on Wednesday, October 12, 2005, under the care of Aspirus Comfort Care and Hospice Services at home.

Lee was born August 14, 1920, in DeKalb, Ill., son of Paul and Bertha Darnell; he was one of 12 children. He married Catherine Morrison on November 21, 1950 in Evansville, Ind.

Lee served in the U. S. Army in the Pacific during WWII, later going into the Air Force in 1951. He retired from the Air Force in 1969. He worked for a Caterpillar dealer in Elmhurst, Ill., until retiring and moving to Wisconsin in 1986, where he worked at the Wausau Daily Herald for six years.

Survivors include his wife Catherine, Merrill; daughters Jeannie (Jim) Conway, Algonquin, Ill.; and Cathy (John) Hozian, Goodyear, Ariz.; son Bill (Rita), Weston; grandchildren Billy Hozian, Madison; Stephanie (Justin) Henderson, Ft. Polk, La.; Jaclyn Hozian, Goodyear, Ariz.; Billy Yaeger, Carpentersville, Ill.; Rebecca and Allison Conway, Algonquin, Ill.; and Willie, Jamie and Chrita Darnell, Wston; great-grandchildren Blain and Surina Henderson, Ft. Polk, La.; four sisters, a brother and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Janet, four brothers and two sisters.

Memorial services will be 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 22, at Bible Presbyterian Church, Merrill. Rev. Robert Smallman will officiate. The Waid Funeral Home, Merrill, served the family. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Bible Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund.
