---Henson, Marie M. (16 Oct. 1915 - 15 Nov. 2003)
Marie M. Henson, 88, of Merrill, died Saturday, November 15, 2003, at Bell Tower Residence in Merrill under Comfort Care and Hospice Services.
Born in Merrill on October 16, 1915, Marie was the daughter of the late Bernhard and Mary Rux Schmidt. She married Royal Henson on August 17, 1940 in the Town of Pine River. He now lives at Bell Tower Residence.
Marie loved her family, friends and community. She had an optimistic view of life that she carried to the end. Her children described her as the heart of the family whom everyone, including grandchildren, called with their latest news. Days before her death she relayed her grandson's latest conversation about a new job to the rest of the group so that everyone would know what was happening. She always worked hard to keep in touch with family members who were scattered across the country from New York to California. Mari felt a strong sense of responsibility for the larger community, and was very active in Christ United Methodist Church, her Monday Club, Eastern Star, and the Merrill Historical Society. She and Royal received the Merrill on the Move award in 1983 for their efforts in organizing and presenting Merrill Heritage Days, which celebrated Merrill's history and drew thousands of spectators. Marie was loved by all who knew her and will always be remembered for her warmth and compassion.
Surviving are her husband Royal; daughters Linda (Bill) Forney, Chicago, Ill.; Christine (Fredric) Knauer, Great Neck, N.Y.; Kathleen (David Pelzer) Henson, Evanston, Ill.; Carol (Dennis) Hintz, Stevens Point; and Betty (Harris) Gilroy, Vista, Calif.; sons John (Brenda) and Richard (Judy), both of Merrill; and Robert, Crystal Bay, Nev.; 14 grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. Also surviving are brother George Schmidt, Merrill; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Monday, November 17, at Christ United Methodist Church, Merrill. Rev. Carolyn Saunders officiated. Burial was in Merrill Memorial Park. The Waid Funeral Home, Merrill, served the family.
