Edwin J. Swanson, 96, of 1401 Highland Drive, Merrill, formerly of Brainerd, Minn., died Saturday, November 20, 2004, at Good Samaritan Health Center, Merrill.

Edwin was born November 24, 1907, in Brainerd, Minn., son of the late Gordon and Mary (Johnson) Swanson. He married Genevieve James on March 18, 1941, in Brainerd. She preceded him in death in 1998.

Edwin served in the United States Army during World War II. He retired from the Minnesota State Highway Department as a foreman after 38 years of serve.

Survivors include his son, Garth (Frieda), Merrill; step-son, Donald (Mary) Smith; Rice Lake; grandchildren, Carrie (John) Dulin, Rachael Swanson, Zachery Swanson, Mary Preston, Jim (Geri) Smith, Donald (Cynthia) Smith, Jr., and Mike Smith; and many great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Tuesday, November 23, at Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd, Minn. The Rev. Rory Swenson officiated. Burial took place in Evergreen Cemetery, Brainerd, with military honors provided by American Legion Post #255 Color Guard. A private visitation for family and close friend was held Sunday, November 21, at the Taylor and Stine Funeral Home, Merrill.
