Gerald 'Gus' Bettin

Gerald "Gus" Bettin died Sunday, Feb. 20, 2005, at his home in Woodruff with Rhoda at his side.

Gerald "Gus" Bettin, son of Hilda (Neumann) and Herbert Bettin was born May 19, 1929, in Oshkosh. He attended and graduated from school in Merrill. Gerald served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He enlisted on Jan. 11, 1951, and was honorably discharged on Jan. 12, 1953. Gerald married Sylvia Meckelholt on Sept. 12, 1953, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Minocqua. They resided in Arbor Vitae for 42 years until Sylvia died on July 31, 1996. Gerald married Rhoda Schmidtke on Dec. 27, 1997. They resided in Edwardsburg, Mich., and moved back to Woodruff this past fall. They were married for seven years.

Gerald has been involved in numerous organizations, including American Legion Madsen Empey Post No. 89 American Legion, FBI National Academy, Wisconsin Sheriffs and Deputy Sheriffs Association, Silver "M" Club of Merrill, Tri-County Association, Northwoods Law Enforcement Association, Wisconsin County Police and Police Radio Operators Association. He loved his family and especially enjoyed it when the grandchildren were around. Gerald loved woodworking, yard work, working on antique cars, church-related activities, traveling, camping, fishing and hunting.

 Gerald is survived by his wife, Rhoda, and her children, Jane and Paul and their families. Gerald's children include Ted (Pam) Bettin of Thief River Falls, Minn., Jerry (Kay) Bettin of Woodruff and Heidi (Mike) Fink of Minocqua; grandchildren, Megan and Tyler Bettin, Becky and Brad Bettin, Brian, Andy and Davey Fink; sisters, June (Merlin) Luedkte of Wisconsin Rapids and Ruth Harbath of Merrill; brother, Dick (Darlene) Bettin of Merrill; and sister-in-law, Eleanor (John) Fruedigmann of Greenwood.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sylvia; and sisters, Adeline, Mildred and Irene.

Funeral services for Gerald "Gus" Bettin were held Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2005, at Peace Lutheran Church in Arbor Vitae. Bolger Funeral Home of Minocqua served the family.
