Clarence H. Baldwin, age 90, 1102 S. Center Ave., Merrill, died Monday, May 24, 2004, at Golden Age Nursing Home, Tomahawk.

Clarence was born Feb. 4, 1914, in Kent, Wash., son of the late William and Annie (Hlinak) Baldwin. He married Elsie A. Greil on June 26, 1940, in Tomahawk. She preceded him in death July 3, 1988.

In 1948, Clarence joined the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department as one of the two original traffic patrol officers for the department. He then served five years with the Wisconsin State Police as a radio dispatcher. From 1959 until 1963, Clarence was again employed with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department, first as the "undersheriff," and then as the sheriff. From 1963 to 1965, Clarence worked as a security guard at Hughes Aircraft in California. Clarence then returned to Wisconsin and served briefly with the Tomahawk Police Department. He retired from law enforcement in 1974 as a sergeant with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department.

Clarence enjoyed reading, woodworking, traveling, and watching sports, especially the Green Bay Packers. Clarence was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Navy from 1942 until 1945. He was with the 1006 Construction Battalion of the Seabees, and was involved in the invasion at Normandy.

Survivors include one daughter, Doreen (Wayne) Pugh, Merrill; one son, Gary Baldwin, Madison; two granddaughters, Amy (Leonard) Bergmann, Merrill, and Betsy (Jerry) Duginski, Wausau; and three great-grandchildren, Rachel, Michael and Ariel Bergmann. One sister, Esther Steib, and four brothers Frank, George, Edward, and Jerry, preceded Clarence in death.

A memorial service for Clarence will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 29, 2004, at Taylor & Stine Funeral Home, Merrill. The Rev. F. Jack Shook will officiate. Burial will take place at a later date in Woodlawn Cemetery, town of Rock Falls. The family will receive friends at the funeral home starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.
