LeRoy Weisman

LeRoy Weisman, 86, of Merrill, died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2008, at Pine Crest Nursing Home, Merrill.

LeRoy was born Oct. 3, 1922, in Fenwood, son of the late Fred and Martha (Pophal) Weisman. He married Helen Young on July 6, 1951. She preceded him in death in July 1968. He then married Marlene Smith in February 1972. She preceded him in death in December of 2000.

LeRoy was a World War II Veteran. He entered into active duty with the U.S. Army on Dec. 15, 1942. He was honorably discharged Jan. 2, 1946. His occupational specialty was anti-aircraft machine gunner. He was stationed in Guam, Germany and the Philippines. LeRoy was a POW. While in service, he was awarded the Bronze Star, the Philippine Liberation Service Ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Ribbon, the American Theater Service Ribbon and the Good Conduct Medal.

LeRoy was employed at the former Anson & Gilke Co., Merrill, for 38 years. During that time, he also was a dairy farmer and a self-employed logger. After he retired, LeRoy drove a dump truck. LeRoy enjoyed snowmobiling, camping and boating. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandkids and meeting family and friends at Pankow's Bar. LeRoy was a member of the Rod and Gun Club, where he enjoyed going to polkas every other week. His favorite pastime was watching Western movies.

Survivors include one son, Elroy (Wendy) Wiesman of Merrill; three stepsons, Roger (Margie) Young and Ronald (Ruth) Young, both of Tomahawk, and Niels Pete (Joni) Nielsen of Lomira; one sister, Lisetta Bohman of Irma; two grandsons, Kenny (Jamie) Wiesman of Irma, and Scottie Wenzlick of Merrill; three step-grandsons, Rodney (Julie) Young of Merrill, Roy (Anne) Young of Tomahawk, and Niel Lund of Lomira; one step-granddaughter, Nichole Nielsen of Lomira; three great-granddaughters, Cheyenne, Haily and Madison Wiesman, all of Irma; one step-great-grandson, Benjamin Young of Merrill; one step-great-granddaughter, Alexandra Young of Merrill; a very special friend, Ralph Wenzlick; and many nieces and nephews. LeRoy was preceded in death by one brother, Carl Pophal; three sisters, Leona Graap, Myrtle Graap and Maryanne Young; one great-grandson, Keaton Wiesman; and one great-granddaughter, Kendel Wiesman.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, at the Taylor-Stine Funeral Home, Merrill. The Rev. Don Entenman will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery, town of Rock Falls. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. Sunday, and after 12 p.m. noon Monday, all at the funeral home.
