MERRILL, Wis. - Chester (Chet) Blumenstein, 97, of Merrill, Wis., passed away Saturday, Dec. 13, 2008, at Bell Tower Residence in Merrill. He was born Nov. 12, 1911, in Milwaukee, Wis., to Frank and Alta Blumenstein.

Chet spent his early years in Merrill, Wis. As a young man he moved his family to Geneva, where he worked at the Illinois State Training School for Girls until his retirement in 1972. He and Alice became snowbirds, traveling south in their Winnebago, where he spent a great deal of time fishing while Alice took up oil painting. In addition to his love for fishing, he was an avid golfer and continued to play well into his 90s. After a few years of traveling, they settled in Minocqua, Wis., where they lived until 2005, when they moved to the Bell Tower Residence in Merrill, Wis.

He is survived by his daughters, Nancy Blumenstein of Fountain Hills, Ariz., and Gail Miller and husband Dick of Austin, Texas; his grandchildren, Brad Miller of Frisco, Texas, and Brian Miller and wife Stacey of McKinney, Texas; and his great-grandsons, Zachary and Cameron Miller.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 69 years, Alice, in December 2005.

The family thanks the hospital staff at Bell Tower Residence for the wonderful care and attention they gave him and also to the hospice team who provided comfort in his last months.
