ELDERLY WIDOW PERISHES IN FIRE

Tomahawk – An elderly widow died when fire swept her frame home early Sunday despite the rescue efforts of two sons and a neighbor.

The body of Mrs. Mary Peters, 85, of the town of Wilson near here, was found on the floor of a bedroom in which she ordinarily did not sleep. Her would-be-rescuers tried in vain to find her in her own smoke-fill bedroom.

Her son, Elmer, with whom she lived, was visiting friends at a home one quarter of a mile away when the fire broke out. Henry, another son, lived next door to his mother. With George Sadoff, a neighbor, they entered the home and searched for Mrs. Peters, but were driven out by flames and smoke.

Firemen from Tomahawk found the body later. The 8 year old house was destroyed. Cause of the fire was not determined.

*Mary is buried in Calvary Cemetery, Tomahawk, Lincoln Co., Wis. Wife of Mathew A. Peters.
