Dr. N. L. Bugarin

Dr. N. L. Bugarin, 74, of 209 W. Merrill Ave., Tomahawk, died Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2005, at Howard Young Medical Center in Woodruff.

Dr. Bugarin was born Sept. 11, 1930, in Gapan Nueva Ecija, Philippines, to the late Soledad (DeLeon) and Ruperto Bugarin. He married Joan Jacobson Jan. 19, 1956, in Wausau. She survives.

He received his primary education in the Philippines and received his medical degree at the University of Santo Tomas, Manila, Philippines. He did post-graduate training in Milwaukee at Evangelical Deaconess Hospital. He came to Tomahawk in 1961 to join Dr. R.J. Henderson and, in 1967, he and Dr. Francisco started the Family Clinic in Tomahawk - which later merged with Rhinelander Clinic and then Ministry Health Care. Due to health problems, he retired in 1989.

He was a member of the American, Wisconsin, and Lincoln County Medical Associations, and also the Philippine and American Society of Abdominal Surgeons. He also was a member of the American Society of Clinic Hypnosis.

He had formerly served on the Tomahawk Police and Fire Commission and on the Tomahawk School Board. He also served as a Lincoln County Deputy Coroner for many years. He was a member of the Drug and Alcohol Commission for the Wisconsin Medical Society.

In 1962, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Award for the Tomahawk Community. In 1980, he was honored for his service to the interns and residents at Deaconess Hospital in Milwaukee. He also had been awarded the Sacred Heart Hospital Partnership in Health Award.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Tomahawk, Rhinelander Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons, the Consistory of the Valley of Eau Claire and the Zor Temple Shrine.

Survivors include his wife, Joan, of Tomahawk; one son, John (Eve) Bugarin of Fort Collins, Colo.; four grandchildren, Katie, John Jr., Jacob and Jaci; two brothers, Alberto Bugarin, Philippines, and Rolando Bugarin, Troy, Mich.; and two sisters, Angelina Rivera, Philippines, and Estrella Urbi of Lady Lake, Fla.

Dr. Bugarin was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, James and Dr. Robert Bugarin; one sister and two brothers.

Memorial services for Dr. Bugarin will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 8, 2005, from Grace Lutheran Church in Tomahawk. The Revs. Mark Ziemer and Don Cannady will officiate. The family will receive friends from 9 a.m. until the hour of services at 11 a.m. Saturday at the church.

In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorials made to Bugarin Family Scholarship Fund, Grace Lutheran Building Fund or Sacred Heart Hospital Foundation.
