TOMAHAWK, Wis. – Earl Stoddard, 74, of Tomahawk, Wis., died Friday, Jan. 28, 2005, at his home.

He was born April 30, 1930, in Waukesha, Wis., to Clayton and Adela Stoddard. He grew up in the Crystal Lake area. He married Barbara Fisher on Aug. 4, 1984, in Woodstock.

He started his law-enforcement career as a police officer in Crystal Lake. He later served as chief of police for the Lakewood Police Department, where he retired after 25 years of service.

He then became a self-employed general contractor in Crystal Lake. He was well-known for his woodworking, making children's toys and furniture, and he also raised turkeys, chickens rabbits and ducks.

He had a great sense of humor.

Survivors include his wife, of Tomahawk; three sons, Steve (Regina) Stoddard of Crystal Lake, Paul (Shelly) Stoddard of Marengo and Brian Stoddard of Phelps, Wis.; four stepsons, George (Kerrie) Gubbins of Woodburn, Ore., William (Julie) Gubbins of Warrenville, Edward (Mell) Gubbins of Little Rock, Ark., and Andy Stoddard of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Mary (Leslie) Gubbins of Algonquin; a brother, Charles (Anita) Stoddard of Crystal Lake; a sister, Irma (Tom) Ference of Lodi, Wis.; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Krueger & Sons Funeral Home, 101 N. Second St., Tomahawk, with a prayer vigil service at 7 p.m. Friends also may call from 9 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, until the funeral Mass is celebrated at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Tomahawk. The Rev. Edward Powell will officiate.

Burial will follow in Prairie Rapids Cemetery.
