TERRIBLE TRAGEDY AT MERRILL

Hibbard Vachereau came from Oregon last week for the purpose of persuading Mrs. Al. Quick of Merrill to leave her husband and child and return west with him, failing in which he shot and probably fatally wounded her, and blew his own head off by firing the revolver into his mouth. Mrs. Quick had feared violence from the man and a policeman was with them at the time of the shooting, narrowly escaping death from shots aimed at him by Vachereau. Early residents of Marshfield claim that Vachereau lived here about sixteen years ago and Al Quick, the husband of the woman, a conductor on the St. Paul road, is well known here. He was a base ball player of some note about fifteen years ago and pitched for the Tivals, a strong local team in 1896.
