A picture of the past ......

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Kleinschmidt, their sons and daughter and employees of the Kleinschmidt saw mill posed for this picture in the late 1800’s. The Kleinschmidts were early Lincoln County pioneers. When a son John Kleinschmidt died in 1953 an editorial in the Merrill Daily Herald stated, “It can well be said that the Kleinschmidts were the people who opened up the frontier southeast of the City of Merrill. They were very early pioneers and when they cut clearings out of the wilderness they hewed the logs and built their homes. They set up small sawmills and cut their own lumber and they entered into the government of their community.” The picture and information was brought in by the family of John Kleinschmidt. The Carl Kleinschmidt’s had 10 sons, Robert, Herman, William, Henry, Julius, Fred, Louis, John, Carl and Albert and one daughter, Mrs. Otillia Broetzman.
