Irma was established on October 1, 1887 under the name of Courtland. The first settlers were the families of B. W. Munro and Nicholas Jourdan. In 1881 C. C. Munro homesteaded the land where the village of Irma was established. In 1887 the railroad was extended to Irma and new settlers came. Early settlers included Chris Kemp, Samuel Nelson, Thomas Solomon, J. A. Johnson and Andrew Wilson. The area was largely farming and the Irma Creamery was established by dairymen in 1900.
