Debt, National. Congressman Wentworth declared in a recent speech, that "this county is in more danger. today from extravangance and corruption than it ever was from the rebellion," and that "never were the times so ominous of a powerful combination to increase the public debt and postpone its payment, to continue the suspensions of specie payments to devote money to questionable railroad companies who already have large grants of lands, and to make extravagant appropriations to questionable objects." This is the testimony of a leading Republican. Nebraska City News 3-8-67 3-1
Debt. National. In New York city during the last six months, there was a falling off in the internal revenue collections of nearly ,000,O00. There is a proportionate falling off every where. The only thing in which there is not a failing off is the expenditures of the government. We are paying $22,000.,000 of useless interest annum to National banks, We support a useless freedmen's bureau t an expense of $200,O00,O0O more per annum. We are pursuing ausels$ Indian War that will cost us more' than $1,000,000,000 per annum. Then a nation constantly increases its expenses, and its receipts become as constantly lessened, the final result is not a matter of doubt. Anti-Slavery Standard, Nebraska City News 8-2-67 2-3
