Of the legal tender notes there are now outstanding a little more than $350,000 exlusive of fractional currency. The act authorizing their issue is dated Febr. 25, 1862. It provides that the United States demand notes shall be lawful money and legal tender in payment of all debts, public and private, within the United States, except for duties on imports and interest on government bonds. Prior to the passage of is act, gold and silver coin of the United States were legal tender for any sums. The importance of the suit now pending at Washington, can hardly be overestimated.
