MEMOIR.
REV. NATHAN LEWIS GUTHRIE.
From the best information obtainable the Rev. Nathan Lewis Gurthrie (sic) came from Southern Michigan or Northern Ohio and not unlikely went to Arizona for his health, and, possibly, on gaining an extended acquaintance felt impelled to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ to the people of his adopted home. For, the first we knew of him is by a recommendation from the Quarterly Conference of Prescott, Arizona, presented by Bishop Andrews to this, the North Nebraska Conference, asking that he be admitted on trial and stationed at Prescott, Arizona, as our missionary. This was done at our fifth annual session held at Ponca, Neb., September, 1885. At our seventh session held it Fremont, Bishop Hurst, by a vote of this Conference, was requested to ordain Bro. Guthrie under the missionary rule as a Deacon and Elder.
Bro. Guthrie has a wife now living in Huntsberg, Ohio, of whom we know nothing as to her condition, age or health, or to his family if any. Bro. Guthrie was a loyal man, as we can attest, for by his own hand he has made due report at each annual session of this Conference, reporting his work, and has been asked by his superintendent for continuous appointment. Our beloved brother has been an honor to this Conference, as much or more than we have been an honor to him. At this Session of Conference our dear brother is reported by another, a transcript of which, sent to our Conference secretary, I will read: "I drop you this note that you may know that the Rev. Nathan Lewis Guthrie, of Wilcox, Arizona, a member of your Conference, died April 1, 1893. He was a faithful devout minister of the gospel, greatly beloved by his people and the members of our mission. During the last three months of his life he was not able to preach, but witnessed to the power of Jesus to sustain and save to the uttermost. His last words to me were: Tell the brothers to preach Jesus more and more. He saves me now and I shall soon reign with Him."
Yours fraternally,
G. F. BOVARD,
Superintendent of Arizona Mission.
This is surely a parting Benediction by a prince royal. May its influence ever abide in our hearts and may we ever cherish and esteem

our sainted and departed dead. For "our people do die well," praise the Lord our God.
J. W. MILLER, Committee.
From a letter received since Conference from Mrs. Georgie N. Guthrie, I glean the following additional facts in memory of her hushand: N. L. Guthrie was born March 18,1841, at Cauneaut, Ohio. He enlisted in the 2d Ohio regiment in 1861, and was in the army until the spring of 1863, when on account of sickness he was discharged. Recovering his health he attended school at Kingsville, Ohio. From there he went to Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he graduated after taking the full classical course. He then accepted a professorship in the military school at Oakland, California, where he continued until 1870 when he entered Drew Theological Seminary. After a course there he accepted a position as principal of the high school at Cauneaut, Ohio, where he remained two years. He then entered the ministry in Michigan Conference where he continued until 1882, when his health failed and he went to Phoenix, Arizona, where he was engaged as principal of the public school. In 1883 he was married to Miss Georgie Nye, of Huntsville, Ohio. Returning to Arizona he was made pastor at Prescott, where he served three years. He also served three years at Flagstaff. Then he was appointed to Wilcox where he served three years and a part of the fourth, when he entered in triumph on his eternal reward. He leaves a widow, a son and a daughter. They are now residing at Ann Arbor, Michigan.
