SUPERINTENDENT OF BOHEMIAN WORK.
Rev. Karl J.. Sladek, our Bohemian
Missionary, who worked in the old Nebraska Conference last year,
concluded a most arduous and encouraging year, during which he
preached 131 sermons, and reports 106 conversions, from which
there were 91 accessions to the church. Twenty-six of these are
still on probation. There has been an increase of twenty-three
Sunday school scholars and ninety-eight are enrolled in a
Bohemian-English Bible class. Bro. Sladek has baptized six adults
and twenty-one children, and has collected from his people for
benevolences $125.00.
During the year John Drahovsel had an attractive
appointment offered him in Kansas and accepted it. Bro. Sladek
secured Frank Horalek from Paris to be his assistant and he has
delighted the Bohemians who have heard him speak and impressed
Americans who know him as able, earnest, and sincere. On condition
that we provide $100 toward his coming expenses, he has agreed to
serve the mission for three years. Brother Horalek is a local
preacher. The second assistant is Bohimal Titera, a local
preacher. Frank Sedy, a Bohemian student pastor, will live and
work among his countrymen in Havelock and study English in
Nebraska Wesleyan University during the coming year, providing we
can arrange for the balance of his expense.
The W. H. M. S. supported during the past year
Mrs. Kejr, who has worked faithfully and with much success.
Miss Julia Sladek completed the Deaconess
Training Course at Kansas City last June and will be an additional
W. H. M. S. worker from now on.
Brother Sladek has collected from Bohemian
churches for local expenses $374.40, and has paid out of his own
salary an overdraft of $145.10 to cover necessary outlays.

REPORTS OF OFFICERS AND COMMITTEES
The auditing committee having examined the
accounts of the district superintendents, of the treasurers of the
three old conferences, of the Rev. G. W. Isham concerning the
Bohemian work, find them correct.
We find further that the account of the Rev. J.
M. Bothwell shows a balance on hand of $58.70; that of Rev.
Hammons, a balance of $32.50; that of Rev. Morris, a balance of
$20.09; and that of Rev. Gaither, a balance of $5.10.
We find still further that in the confusion of
readjustment of the benevolences, there was left in the hands of
the treasurer of the old Nebraska Conference, the sum of $72.00,
belonging to the local Conference Claimants' Fund, the error being
discovered too late to be used this year.
We find also that the account of G. W. Isham
shows that he has paid out $15.85 in excess of his receipts. We
recommend that he be reimbursed in that amount, providing there be
funds available for that purpose.
The reports of the conference treasurer and the
treasurer of the Conference Minute Funds submitted were found to
be correct.
T. S. WATSON, Chairman
JOSEPH TUMA, Secretary.
Resolved: 1. That we express to the officers
and men of the army and navy our cordial prayers and Christian
sympathy;
2. That we urge our Senators and Representatives
in Congress to use their utmost influence to have an adequate
number of Chaplains provided for in both Army and Navy, and ample
provisions of chapels, libraries, and gymnasia;
3. That we instruct our Senators and
Representatives to insist that the moral and spiritual welfare of
our officers and men under arms, be carefully considered in the
administration of the Army and Navy, as they are in large part the
sons of Christian homes and will soon return to civil life, and
they are precious to the church, loaned for a short time to this
public service;
148 |
|
4. That we set apart the Sunday before the
Fourth of July as Patriotic Day, and we advise that at least one
service be devoted to promoting a sustained interest in the men
who serve under flag both the Regular Army and the National
Guard;
5. That we demand of our State Legislature to
create and maintain as wide a zone as possible around each army
post, within which shall be prohibited, under heavy penalties, the
sale of intoxicating liquors, gambling and houses of
prostitution;
6. That a permanent Committee be maintained from
this body and from the laity of the churches of one layman and
minister from each district to cooperate with like committees from
other churches, to keep themselves informed as to the moral and
spiritual needs' of these national forces and to endeavor to have
those needs supplied.
Recognizing as we do the importance of God's
Word in the work of the church and the success of Christ's
Kingdom, we submit the following resolutions:
1. That we place on record our appreciation of
the work done by the American Bible Society in the printing and
sending out of the Holy Scriptures.
2. That for it we, the members of the Nebraska
Conference, will speak our warmest words, and for its great work
our earnest prayers, and urge upon our people the necessity of
meeting our apportionment in full, and
3. Believing as we do that the Word of God
teaches the highest moral standards, we will hail the day when
that Word may be read and taught in the public schools of
Nebraska.
L. YOST, Chairman.
J. A. ROUSEY, Secretary.
Your committee begs leave to offer the
following recommendations:
That the publication of the Semi-monthly
Apologetic and Evangelistic Bohemian paper--"Zivot" be continued,
and that we pledge to it the financial help necessary to make this
possible.
That a fund of $1,000.00 be raised to pay the
deficit of the last two years in the publication and incidental
funds of the mission and to meet these expenses this year, and
that appeals for this cause be authorized among our churches and
people.
That our Bishop and General Conference District
Representatives be asked to urge upon the General Committee on
Home Missions and
|
149 |
Church Extension the great importance and need of strengthening
this work..
That we memorialize the General Committee on
Home Missions and Church Extension to appropriate at least $2,500
for Bohemian Missions in Nebraska for 1914.
That we request our Bishop to appoint G. W.
Isham Superintendent of Bohemian Missions in Nebrsaka (sic) for
the coming year.
R. F. FARLEY, Secretary.
Believing that the Methodist Brotherhood
should be a strong factor in the solution of our financial,
social, evangelistic and other problems;
We recommend the organization of a chapter
wherever practicable.
We call attention to the convention of Methodist
Men, to be held in Indianapolis, Indiana, October 2831, 1913.
We urgently ask that the Brotherhood be given
recognition on the program of the next session of the Nebraska
Conference.
We recommend the organization of a Nebraska
Conference Brotherhood, and make the following nominations:
In the matter of the Conference Claimants'
Endowment Funds of these conferences we report as follows:
In the North Nebraska and the West Nebraska
Conferences there is no general endowment, but each has what is
known as a Preachers' Aid Society, which is incorporated according
to the laws of the State of Nebraska.
The society within the bounds of the North
Nebraska Conference is known as the Conference Claimants'
Association of the North Nebraska Conference of the Methodist
Episcopal Church, and has a paid up capital of $6,097.81.
The society within the bonds of the West
Nebraska Conference is know as the "Preachers' Aid Society of the
West Nebraska Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church," and
has a paid up capital of $5176.

In both of these conferences only such
members of the conference as are members of these societies are in
any way beneficiaries on the funds of the society.
The Nebraska Conference has what is known as
"The Trustees of the Conference Claimants' Endowment Fund of the
Nebraska Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church," having a
general endowment amounting to $51,540, and constituted as

way by which they may

be combined. We therefore, beg leave to report the following
recommendations concerning these societies for the consideration
of the conference:
(1). We would recommend that the North Nebraska
and the West Nebraska Conferences unite the Preachers' Aid
Societies of these conferences, making one society, the same to be
incorporated according the laws of the State of Nebraska, and
under the name of the "Preachers' Aid Society of the Nebraska
Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church," membership
in this society to be made accessible to any member of the
conference in effective service, under such rules and regulations
as shall be provided by the Board of Trustees of the society when
approved by the Auditor of State and the members of the Nebraska
Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church.
*the Nebraska Annual Conference of the Methodist Episcopal
Church.* (*---*sic)
(2). We would recommend that the general or
democratic endowment begun in the Nebraska Annual Conference,
shall be continued under the following conditions:
(a) Inasmuch as the pastors within the bounds of
the Nebraska Annual Conference have paid or subscribed about
$4.500 to the general endowment already raised in this conference,
we feel that it is only fair that this Commission shall request
the ministers coming into the new conference from the North
Nebraska and the West Nebraska Conferences to contribute to this
fund a pro rata amount with that contributed by the members of the
Nebraska Conference.
(b) We recommend that a field agent of field
agents shall be appointed by the presiding Bishop, at the coining
session of the Nebraska Annual Conference, to present the cause
and solicit funds for the general endowment from the territory
formerly known as the North Nebraska and the West Nebraska
Conferences. We especially recommend that the canvass within this
new territory shall be pushed from this session of the conference,
and also that the canvass already begun in the territory of what
has been known as the Nebraska Conference shall be continued that
no tentative pledges or bequests may be lost.
(c) We recommend that the Articles of
Incorporation of the Society known as "The Trustees of the
Conference Claimants' Endowment Fund of the Nebraska Conference of
the Methodist Episcopal Church" shall be amended as follows:
To make the Board of Trustees to consist of not
less than nine nor more than twleve (sic) members.
To change article three so that the amount of
endowment possible to accumulate by the society shall be Two
Hundred and Fifty Thousand Dollars instead of One Hundred Thousand
Dollars as in the present articles.

We have made marked progress in our work during the year now closing the best year by far, all considered, in the history of the Society. The Field Secretary has received in new subscriptions and cash, $6,125.00; a good cottage has been purchased at Clay Center, which with some improvements now being made, will be ready for oc-

cupancy this week, The total cost of this property of seven
rooms is less than $2,000.00. Through the generosity of Hiram
Burch a cottage has been secured in University Place at a cost of
slightly over two thousand dollars. Brother Burch and family
giving $700.00 of this amount.
An Elect-Brother has, by will, planned to pay
the full cost of a brick cottage.
The plan of annual payment has been tested this
year in re-visiting a number of charges where the five annual
payments have been completed, and in almost every case the
renewals have exceeded the previous subscriptions. The interest of
our people in this work is growing rapidly.
C. M. SHEPHERD,
Field Secretary.
Resolved:
1st. That we recommend the election of the
following Trustees.
For one year--A. C. Crosthwaite, L. H. Shumate,
G. H. Main. For two years.--W. B. Alexander, M. S. Porter, Wm.
Esplin. For three years--J. F. Poucher, J. H. Worley, R. F.
Shacklock.
2nd. We recommend the appointment of C. M.
Shepherd as field secretary, and ask the Bishop to appoint him to
that work.
3rd. We recommend that each person receiving an
appointment from the Bishop pay 1/2 of 1% of his cash salary for
salary and expenses of the field secretary, the surplus, if any to
be turned into the Endowment Fund.
On recommendation of their respective
quarterly conferences, the licenses of the following deaconesses
have been renewed. Miss Emmaline Garrett, Miss Maude Adams, Miss
Mamie D. Cook, and Miss Elizabeth Hartman, all of whom the Board
recommends for your approval as suitable persons to work as
deaconesses in the Nebraska Conference.
Miss Cora Weetman is beyond the bounds of the
conference and no recommendation for renewal of her license has
been received.
The St. Paul church, Lincoln, quarterly
conference recommends the renewal of the license of Miss Nellie R.
Rouse, but as her transfer has not been received by the board, we
cannot act upon it.
Miss Clara Dobson is continued on probation in
the studies of the first year.
Miss Minnie Lockwood has been transferred to the
Northern Minnesota Conference.

COMMITTEE ON CONFERENCE EVANGELISTS
The committee recommends the appointment of
the following six men as Conference Evangelists: G. I. Wright,
Joel A. Smith, Raymond Rush, F. A. Campbell, H. L. Powers, Gerriet
Janssen.
That each evangelist be required to report his
work done during the Conference year within the conference
boundary and the compensation for that work.
That the district superintendents consider the
plan that has been in operation on the Neligh District during the
past year, that of the employment of one of the Conference
Evangelists as a District Evangelist, with a view to its adoption
by the several districts of the conference.
W. H. WRIGHT, Secretary.
We, your committee on the Charter of the
Crowell Home, would respectfully report our findings as follows.
All that seems necssary (sic) to meet the new conditions is to
amend the Articles of Incorporation by substituting the following
for Article III.
Trustees.--(a) The board of Trustees shall
consist of thirteen members; seven ministerial and six lay
members.
(b) Three Trustees to be elected by the
Northwest Nebraska Conference and seven to be elected by the
Nebraska Conference, and in addition, the Resident Bishop, the
District Superintendent of the district in which Blair is located,
and the pastor of the M. E. church in Blair shall be members, ex
officio.
(c) The Board of Trustees shall have authority
to fill all vacancies until the meeting of the next Annual
Conference.
We recommend as the present method of procedure
that this conference elect two laymen for two years and two
ministers and three laymen for four years.
H. H. MILLARD, Secretary.
Your committee is pleased to be able to
report that this beautiful Home for worthy aged Methodists is
measuring up to its present capacity of usefulness. It is the
opinion of your committee that its capacity should be enlarged,
that others entitled to a claim upon this institution may be able
to avail themselves of the same.
We therefore recommend, that the request of the
trustees of said institution be granted, which is as follows:
1st. That we ask Conference to apportion a
maintenance fund of $5000.
|
155 |
2nd. That we ask for an apportionment of
$10,000 for a new wing to the north of the present building.
3rd. That this apportionment be made by the
cabinet to the various districts, and by the district
superintendents to the charges.
4th. That the pastors arrange to raise said
apportionment early in the year, and forward same to the
superintendent of the home, Wm. Esplin, in order that the work may
begin as soon as possible.
We propose the following persons to be elected
as members of the Board of Trustees of the Home:
Bishop Frank M. Bristol. |
{Ex-Officio. |
Erastus Smith, Kearney. |
E. J. HAYES, Chairman.
C. A. NORLIN, Secretary.
The Secretary of the Crowell Memorial Home
begs to submit the following report:
The Crowell Home as an Institution for retired
ministers, their wives, widows, and deaconesses, as well as worthy
members of the church, is occupying a larger place in the
Methodism of Nebraska each year. The past year has been the most
successful of the seven of its existence.
Under the most able direction of Superintendent
Wm. Esplin and his estimable wife as Matron, the interests of the
Institution as well as the residents, have been well cared for,
and the atmosphere of the place is most homelike. With the sixteen
residents, the available space is occupied, and to meet the
increasing demand it will be necessary to add a wing, which we are
asking the friends of the Institution to consider.

Respectfully submitted,
CHAS. P. LANG,
Secretary.
Seeing the great spiritual poverty of so many
of our churches and believing that Jesus pointed out the supreme
work of His church on earth when He said, "I came not to call the
righteous but sinners to repentance," we therefore wish to present
the following resolutions:
Resolved, That each pastor in this conference
shall go into the closet of prayer and remain there until the
spirit of Jesus shall prepare him for this greatest and most
difficult of all work.
That we recommend a house to house visitation on
every charge in order that we may have a religious census of the
entire field.
That we form prayer leagues with the direct
object of asking God to prepare us for this first year's work in
this conference, that it shall be marked by a gracious revival
throughout its bounds.
L. V. SLOCUMB, Chairman.
T. C. WEBSTER, Secretary.
Whereas, the Epworth League occupies a most
important field of the church work, and
Whereas, there is danger of neglect and
superficial work in this field,
Be it resolved, That as pastors we pledge the
League our hearty support in untiring effort to help its members
to the highest standard of New Testament life, and
Be it further resolved, that the district
meetings be confined more closely to practical problems and their
solution, with an interchange of plans and experiences.
Resolved that each League formulate a plan
whereby it may raise at the earliest possible date, the
proportionate amount for the Endowment of the Chancellor's chair
of the Nebraska Wesleyan University, and that as leaders we use
every opportunity to turn the stream of students from our Leagues
to the Wesleyan.
|
157 |
We desire to express our appreciation of the
Epworth Assembly and its management under the direction of its
efficient president.
We recommend the organization of Junior and
Intermediate Leagues wherever possible, and that special effort be
made to train up leaders for this work.
C. L. MYERS, Chairman
CHAS. M. McCORKLE, Secretary
To comply with the action of the last General
Conference in voting large increases to the items of Episcopal
support and in addition to this transferring the entire expenses
of the Missionary Episcopate to the Episcopal Fund.
Be it resolved, That we emphasize the imperative
necessity of raising the amount apportioned to this conference in
order to meet the actual demands upon the treasury.
JOHN D. HAMMEL, Chairman.
E. N. TOMPKINS, Secretary.
We Recommend:
1. That this Conference renew its approval of
the Nebraska-Church Federation.
2. That, as the meetings of the State Council
are now biennial, the term of office of representatives to the
State Council hereafter be two years, and that thirteen
representatives be chosen at this time.
3. That the individual churches of our body be
urged to co-operate heartily in promoting the work of Church
federation.
A. C. SPENCER,
Chairman.
WM. F. HASKINS,
Secretary.
Whereas, The last general conference
recommended a more systematic plan for caring for her benevolencs
(sic), and
Whereas, this plan involves an every member
canvass, offerings upon the weekly basis, the use of the duplex
envelope, two treasurers, and quarterly remittances,
158 |
|
Therefore, be it resolved, that this
conference places itself unreservedly behind this plan and pledges
the hearty support of pastors and district superintendents in the
general introduction of the plan, and
Be it further resolved that the conference
commission on finance be instructed to appoint a committee to make
a thorough study of the benevolent situation in this conference
and to present a written report at the next session of the
conference.
ALLEN CHAMBERLAIN.
The committee, desires to emphasize the
importance of maintaining mission study classes within the bounds
of each charge wherever practicable.
In order that our youth may grow up in touch
with world-wide evangelism, we recommend missionary instruction in
the Sunday School. We urge an increased interest by our pastors
and people so that a steady advance may be maintained.
W. R. WARREN, Chairman,
E. T. ANTRIM, Secretary
The good work these faithful women have done
and the splendid results they have obtained by their toil, give
the church much cause for joy and gratitude.
The pressing need now is that the number of
these faithful few be augmented by many thousand more.
We recommend that the pastors be diligent and
faithful in presenting the work of this society to their churches,
and organizing societies wherever possible, and that one public
Sabbath service during the year be given the society for
representation of their work.
W. T. TAYLOR, Chairman.
G. R. NEWKIRK, Secretary.
We congratulate of Freedman's Aid Society for
the grand work it has accomplished, and realizing the great need
for Christian work among the freedmen, we pledge ourselves to
faithful co-operation in this work.
We recommend that Lincoln Day be observed and
the program of the society be used to present the cause to our
people.
C. H. CHADER, Chairman.
H. A. TAYLOR, Secretary.

HOME MISSIONS AND CHURCH EXTENSION
We look upon the Board of Home Missions and
Church Extension as the most efficient agency that we have for the
solution of the many great problems which now confront the church.
Therefore, we pledge it our hearty co-operation and support. We
desire to express our appreciation of the quick response and
relief given to the stricken churches of Omaha in their hour of
great trial.
Realizing the condition of certain parts of our
conference, we recommend that the appropriations of the Board to
this territory be commensurate to the great need, especially to
the work among the Bohemians.
F. O WINSLOW, Chairman,
W. P. SLOCUM, Secretary.
On December 18, 1911, at a meeting of the Home Missions Council called to meet at the Y. M. C. We, the committee, respectfully submit the
following resolutions:
We commend the work being done by the Woman's
Home Missionary Society. They are striving to send the light into
every dark corner of America; they are using every effort to solve
the Bohemian question in our own state.
We recommend the assistance of our brethern
(sic) to help them in
160 |
|
the enterprise of enlarging and improving Mother's Jewels' Home
at York; also the Kansas City National Training School for
Deaconesses and Missionaries.
We recommend the observance of Home Mission week
by all of the pastors in November, and the securing of the
material furnished by the board.
We pledge them our hearty co-operation and the
chance to make their work known from our pulpits.
W. O. ROMICK, Secretary.
The Nebraska Methodist Hospital and Deaconess
Home during the past year has rendered a Christ-like service, not
only to the whole of Methodism of our own and adjoining states,
but also to all who have sought her kindly help and service. We
rejoice in the enlarged usefulness of this splendid institution.
We commend the trustees for their wise management, and rejoice
that the new wing has been brought to completion and is now ready
for service. There is, however, a debt of $40,000, which, if the
apportionment be paid in full will not embarrass the
institution.
In view of the cost of $200.00 per month for
current expenses of the nurses and deaconess home, it is
imperative that steps be taken to build a permanent home as soon
as possible.
We recommend that the district superintendents
apportion to their respective districts a sum equal to 25c per
member for the coming year, and especially plead with our pastors
that every effort be put forth to raise this amount.
We call attention to the free work done by this
institution where the needy and unfortunate may receive the best
and most skillful aid. We commend the work of the superintendent
and all her associates, and pray God's blessings upon their noble
work.

in ability and service. Our Superintendent has maintained her
remarkable record as head of the institution and all things have
worked harmoniously.
The new wing is practically completed and though
much more time has been taken than was expected when the contract
was let, we feel sure that with the changes and additions that
have been installed we have had as good service as we could well
expect.
This wing will greatly add to our ability to
serve the sick and suffering and we hope that before we shall be
obliged to make another addition to the hospital that we may be
able to erect a suitable Nurses' Home so that we can save paying
rent and have better quarters for our workers.
The cost of the new wing, not including the
furnishing of the rooms will be a little more than $70,000.00 and
we have been compelled to make a loan of about $40,000.00 which we
hope to see paid in good time.
We can never hope to meet the requirements of
our work unless we follow the example of other charitable
institutions and keep our needs before the public in such away
that we can get what the Lord hag designed that we should have for
this much needed Christian work.
We specially urge the best efforts of all the
brethren to meet the full apportionment, 25c per capita.
G. A. LUCE, President.
We, your Committee, would respectfully submit
the following report: We most heartily commend all our
Non-Connectional Benevolences which are directly under the control
of our church, or of any organization within the church. We would
specifically mention the Nebraska Wesleyan University, The
Nebraska Methodist Hospital, Crowell Home, Mother's Jewels' Home
and our Bohemian Work.
We also endorse the Anti-Saloon League. We
further recommend that our pastors require all others desiring to
present their causes to our churches to first secure the consent
of the Official Boards of said churches.
E. J. T. CONNELY, Chairman,
D. A. LEEPER, Secretary.
We desire to thus express our appreciation of the work of the Methodist Book Concern during the past year, as well as the increase in business. We gladly note the visit of Geo. P. Mains, of the Book Concern,

and of C. B. Spencer, of the Central Christian Advocate, to our
conference.
With pleasure we note that the subscriptions to
the Advocate within our territory have an increase of nearly one
hundred percent, or a gain of 1,800 during the year. We commend
our pastors for their assistance in this achievement and urge the
canvass to bring the Advocate into every home; as well as the
Methodist Review and other of our church publications.
J. R. SMITH, Chairman.
The Commision (sic) recommend that 5,500
copies of the minutes be published.
That an apportionment of one-fourth of one
percent of cash salary of all who receive appointments at the
hands of the bishop be made to pay for publication of minutes.
That the express be prepaid on minutes paid for
at conference.
That five copies of minutes be allowed for each
dollar paid and that single copies be sold at twenty-five
cents.
That the Secretary of the Conference be paid a
salary of $100 per annum.
That all necessary expenses of conference
officers be paid out of the minute fund.
That H. F. Huntington be elected Treasurer of
the Minute Fund.
G. W. ISHAM, Chairman.
We, the committee on District Conference records, report that we have examined all records placed in our hands, viz: Those of Norfolk, Holdredge, Neligh, and Grand Island Districts, and to the best of our knowledge find the same correct.
D. W. PARKER, Chairman.
S. E. TAFT, Secretary.
Resolved, That we express our appreciation
for the presence of our Resident Bishop, Frank M. Bristol, as
president of our conference.
The ardous (sic) labors of the secretary, the
treasurer, the statistician and their assistants require them to
forego many of the social and other privileges of the conference;
therefore, resolved that we voice our high apreciation (sic) of
their valuable services.
We express our sincere gratitude to the people

versity Place, and Havelock who have graciously received and
entertained us during this conference session; to the Lincoln
State Bank; to the press; to Clark A. Fulmer, Chancellor of
Nebraska Wesleyan University, and the women of the First Methodist
Episcopal church of University Place for the bountiful banquet
served in the parlors of the church upon the occasion of our visit
to Wesleyan. And further, we are especially grateful to the City
Evangelization Union of Lincoln, the pastors, the district
superintendents, and particularly to J. Franklin Boeye, pastor of
Grace Church, and to the Ladies' Aid Society of Grace Church for
the bountiful way in which they have cared for the dining of the
conference. We have enjoyed the delightful association of their
homes and have been shown true Christian hospitality.
We are grateful to all who have aided in making
the program of this conference a success, especially to Dr. Rall
for his series of addresses, and to those who have represented the
various causes of our church.
The associations and comradeship occasioned by
the formation of the Nebraska Conference are delightfully
pleasant. It is with great satisfaction that we record our joy in
this union. We pray that with the increase of responsibility and
opportunity there will come also a deeper consecration and a
greater zeal in the services of our Lord and Saviour, Christ.
J. M. MacDONALD, Chairman,
OSCAR W. REYNOLDS, Secretary.
Whereas, the tendencies to a holiday and
work-day Sunday have been marked, and it is necessary for good
citizens of all classes to unite in an effort to preserve the
quiet, thoughtful, worshipful Sabbath for ourselves, our children
and the interests of our country;
Whereas, we have learned with deep regret that
our state fair is open on the Sabbath Day, and that this
conference, representing more than 50,000 Methodists of the state,
deplores such desecration of the Sabbath,
Therefore be it resolved that we earnestly
request the State Fair Board to close the fair on the Lord's
day.
That we recommend that the secretary of this
conference send a copy of these. resolutions to the State Fair
Association.
That we recommend that our pastors preach and
distribute literature on Sabbath observance.
That we heartily endorse the work of the Sunday
League of America, and promise the League our hearty support.
S. W. LONGACRE, Chairman.
L. R. KECKLER, Secretary.
