ROYCE, ROYS, RICE FAMILY

The following was taken from the court records of Wallingford, Ct., by Mrs. Seth Hall of Meriden, Ct., for Mrs. John B. Clotworthy of Hillman, Georgia.

Mrs. Hall has from other sources the immigrants and children's births not given in Wallingford, one a daughter, from New London, Ct. The dates of the marriages of the sons who settled in Wallingford, Ct., with many of their descendants are given.

In "Somerset Visitations" by Philmore & Company, Vol, 1, p. 116, it says Robert Royce of Martock, Somerset, married June 4, 1624, Mary Sims of Long Sutton, Somerset. He is said to have come in the ship Francis from Ipswich. He was first found at Stratford, Ct. In 1644, he was at New London, Ct. He died 1676 and his widow was living on his estate in 1688. Without dates the order of birth of their children cannot be given. Children of Robert Royce and Mary Sims were:

 1. NEHEMIAH ROYCE, m. Nov. 20, 1660, Hannah Morgan, dau. of James Morgan.
 2. Samuel Royce, m. 1st Jany. 9, 1667, Hannah Churchill, m. 2nd June 5, 1690, Sarah Baldwin.

Miss Katherine Dickerman in the July, 1923, number of the Nebraska and Midwest Genealogical Record, p. 44, gives the birth of Samuel Royce as 1672, when from the above record it shows that he was married to his first wife in 1667. Mrs. J. B. Clatworthy is descended from two of their children, namely Robert, their eldest, who married Mary Porter in 1692, and Prudence, who married John Austin. Samuel names his eldest son, Robert, in his will, as also one of his children by Sarah Baldwin. Sarah married in New London and Ruth was born there. Sarah may have been the eldest.

NOTES AND COMMENTS

WINNIE STANDISH. Winnie Standish, a graduate of the Kansas State Normal School, traces a dimple in
her chin back three hundred years without a break in the succession to Miles Standish, the illustrious
captain of Plymouth. Her father, Miles Standish, is a farmer living near Holton, Kansas. She is one
of six children born in Cass County, Nebraska.

MARY JOHNSTON. Mary Johnston, author of "To Have and to Hold"," Croatan", "Silver Cross", etc., is
an aristocrat by birth. She is descended from Peter Johnston, who in 1727 arrived in Virginia from
Scotland, and behind him the Annandale clan of Johnston, seated in Dumfrieshire since William the
Conqueror. On her mother's side she comes from a Scotch-Irish family which traces itself to one of
the citizen soldiers in the siege of Londonderry in 1668. She had many ancestors and kinsmen in the
Revolutionary and Civil Wars. Joseph E. Johnston, the celebrated Confederate general, was her uncle.

Colonial Dames of America have undertaken to raise $100,000 with which to maintain Sulgrave
Manor, the ancestral home of George Washington in North Hamptonshire, England. The Kansas
Mayflower Society made a donation of $25 to this fund. Sulgrave Manor is the only place in England,
with the exception of the United States embassy, where the United States flag flies all the time. The
