THE NEBRASKA AND MIDWEST GENEALOGICAL RECORD

Farragut, Ia. At the time of his marriage he was a druggist at Farragut but in about three years he moved to a farm about nine miles southeast. In 1889 he decided to go further west. He filed on government land in the southwest county of South Dakota and moved his family there in the spring of 1890. This was considered "the far west" in those days, and the following letter shows some of the situations of that time. The letter is to his father-in-law.

Jan. 11, 1891. Oelrichs, S. D.

C. W. Robbins, Farragut, Ia.
Dear Sir: I was at Hot Springs this last week on duty as county commissioner, but am home again now and will answer you regarding, the "Adams" place. * * * *

I don't think the Indians will burn any hay for us nor get our stock. We have lots of Government guns and I have a new six-shooter, and if they get our stock they will have to fight for it. Lt. Casey was brought to Oelrichs past our ranch a few days ago. He had been shot about 35 miles northeast of here. I saw 21 Indians over east of Brookfields about a week ago.

Respectfully yours,
J. H. White.

He accumulated a large tract of land in Fall River County, S. D., owning at one time 14,000 acres. When his children began to need better school advantages than provided in that locality he established a home in Chadron, Nebr., about thirty miles from the ranch. There he became interested in mercantile life and also in the banking business, being vice-president of the Chadron State Bank.

His wife, Annie Maria Robbins was born August 15, 1862, at Union Star, Ky., and moved to Farragut in 1878. Following are some of her lines of ancestry: Daughter of

Chas. Warren Robbins and Mary Louisa Watlington, daughter of

James Cox (in War of 1812) and Mary Elizabeth Seaton. daughter of

Wm. Seaton and Judith Tolliver, daughter of

"Capt". Tolliver, a wealthy slave owner in Virginia.
