The following is written in pencil on paper, which is with the Bible records. It is thought to have been written by George Harris:
Father was born in the town of Otego in the year 1821. Grandfather Harris' given name was Silas and Grandmother's Diana Pratt Harris, who was born in Pratsville [sic] N. Y. Grandfather Harris came from Connecticut and his father from England*.
*The tradition, so common among New York families of New England origin, that the great grand father came from England, was probably due to the fact that the older people called themselves English.
This abstract was made from the records of the New Gardens and Deep River Meetings, Guilford County, North Carolina, and were obtained from the Quaker Archives of North Carolina.

The notes on the Lyon Family of Jefferson County, New York, published in this issue, illustrate the use and emphasize the importance of census records in genealogical research. Perhaps many of our readers are unaware of the New York State Census of 1835 and of 1855. These records in most cases were left in the hands of county authorities, but many of the original papers which are still in existence have passed into private hands.
What are we doing to preserve our valuable school census records in Nebraska? Are these old records, which the County Superintendent of Schools no longer consults and which take up room often needed for later records, to be left to the mercy of some zealous house cleaning official? The Nebraska Territorial Census Records of 1854 and 1855 have already disappeared. Less than two years ago the records of more than twenty G. A. R. posts were found in possession of a junk dealer, where they had been sold as old paper. As each pioneer family is broken up and scattered, important private papers are certain to be destroyed. For instance, many pioneer physicians kept records of the cases they attended, giving dates of birth and the ages of their patients; many ministers kept complete records of marriages performed, notes regarding the sick visited and statements of funerals attended.
Federal and school census records are the very foundation of the history of the state, the source upon which the statistics of population, migrations, social organization and industries of early times are based. The true history of the state cannot be written without them. The genealogical value is only one of the many reasons why our early records must be preserved. We need an archivist in Nebraska to search out, bargain for, and properly file all old records, public and private, to be found in the state. Now is the time to act.
