NEBRASKA CENSUS, 1856, LANCASTER COUNTY
    In 1856 Lancaster County consisted only of the northern two thirds of the present county. This enumeration was made by S. T. W. Thrapp, who was sworn in August 1, 1856. The certificate that the returns were correct was not dated. All the inhabitants were given as living at Chester. None of them were listed as living in Lancaster County in 1860. The plat book of the United States government survey shows the City of Chester on parts of W1/2 of 13 and E1/2 of 14, T 9N, R 6 E, located 1 1/2 miles due south of the present State Penitentiary site. On January 11, 1856, a bill was introduced in the territorial legislature to locate the capital of Nebraska at Chester.

  (c) When John D. Prey and son were on their way to Salt Creek to settle, (June, 1856), they met three men from Plattsmouth, Whitmore, Tames Cardwell and Simon Thrapp, who were returning from Salt Creek, where they had staked out claims on which they intended to speculate. They had built a log hut near where Lincoln is. - Sawyer, Andrew J., Lincoln and Lancaster County, Nebraska, Vol. I, pp. 17, 338.
  (d) S. T. W. Thrapp, b. May 25, 1833, Wayne Co., U., came to Plattsmouth in the spring of 1854 and began speculating in land. In 1855 he was connected with a stock company that laid out a town on the present site of Lincoln. (See incorporation of City of Chester in Session Laws, First Territorial Legislature.) Later he was a hospital steward at Fort Kearney and Fort Randall and then a contract doctor in the regular army. He settled in Butler Co. in 1865, where he was known as a physician in 1882. He married Miss Margarette Reed at Plattsmouth. - Andreas, History of Nebraska, p. 465.
  (e) In the spring of 1856 a family by the name of Whitmore was driven from their home near the Salt Basin (now Lincoln) by the Indians. - Ibid, p. 473.
  (g) In 1856 William Norman and Alexander Robinson, who represented a salt company, settled near the Salt Basin, but they left the next spring. - Sawyer, Vol. I, p. 76.
  (f) William Kempton, a member of the First Territorial Legislature, was one of the three commissioners appointed to establish a seat of justice in the newly formed Lancaster Co.- Session Laws, 1855, p. 339. In 1857 he is named as a director in two different salt companies, incorporated to make salt at the Salt Basin. - Session Laws, 1857.

 

NEBRASKA CENSUS, 1856, CLAY COUNTY
  Clay County as formed by the First Territorial Legislature was twenty four miles square and lay between the counties of Lancaster and Gage. In 1863 the county was divided by the legislature. the northern half being added to Lancaster and the Southern half to Gage. Later the name was given to a different county

farther west. This enumeration was taken by S. T. W. Thrapp, who also enumerated Lancaster County. Only the Prey family is found in the federal census of 1860. All below were listed as farmers and as living at Salt Creek.

  (a) Zebediah Buffington and family accompanied John D. Prey and his son from Council Bluffs, Ia., to Salt Creek in June 1856. With the help of Prey's son he built a log house, but he abandoned his claim the same year. - Sawyer, Andrew J., Lincoln and Lancaster County, Vol. I, pp. 338-339.

They came to America in 1850, living in Illinois in Lake and Clark counties and came to North Bend in July 1856. The wife died that December, three weeks after the birth of their fourth child. - Ibid, pp. 631, 665.
  (j) John Miller, b. in Scotland, July 12, 1826, came to America Feb. 1854 and to North Bend July 1856. He married in Ill., Sept. 17, 1855, Rachael Woodrum, b. Jan. 17, 1833, in Clark Co., Ill. - Ibid, p. 664.
  (1) Mr. Miller, who lived in Omaha, was financially interested in this settlement.
  (m) Platte River settlement was located about two miles west of the present city of Fremont.

  (d) Carl Reinke, b. 1828, Prussia, came to America in 1854 and to Nebraska March 1856. He married, Sept. 20, 1861, Miss Margaret Pilling, a native of England. - Ibid, p. 1283.
