THE NEBRASKA AND MIDWEST

GENEALOGICAL RECORD

VOL. IX

LINCOLN, NEBRASKA, JANUARY-APRIL, 1931

NOS. 1-2

MRS. HARRIET TAYLOR

It is with a sad regret that we note the passing of Mrs. Harriet Taylor, custodian emeritus of the Genealogical Collection in the Newberry Library, Chicago. Mrs. Taylor died in the Illinois Masonic Hospital in Chicago, 21 June, 1931.

For thirty-five years Mrs. Taylor has been known throughout the Middle West by all who used that Collection. She was thoroughly individualistic, and once known could never be forgotten. Her famous black satin costume, apparently designed for her in the 1890s, with its high collar edged with real lace, puffed sleeves and tight waist-band from which hung a long, much-pleated, and very voluminous skirt, always remained the same, and could be seen almost every day, whisking about the suite of rooms over which she really presided. Many a timid seeker after genealogical data has been awed by the Presence, to find, on closer acquaintance, a personality of great interest and a mind alert to help in the search for obscure vital records. Many of our readers will remember the head of red finger curls, which, miraculously never gray in spite of their seventy-odd years of existence, bobbed about the room and among the stacks as their wearer brought out book after book for the inquirer in family history. And now the worn body, wrapped for the last time in its great sheath of black satin, has been laid at rest, and we'll see no longer the familiar figure, which has greeted so many of us, as we entered the sanctum, with:

"How do you do? What can we get you this morning?"

Mrs. Taylor was a thorough-going monarchist, educated in England and imbued with the English sense of class distinction. She had a thorough respect for aristocracy as well as an unconscious deference to those who her keen instinct told her were born to the manner. She disliked democracy as exemplified in these United States, and never hesitated to express her decided opinion of democratic institutions, much to the delectation of her listeners. She took it for granted that every searcher who came to the Newberry was anxious to trace his or her line "across the Water" and into the mother country. Of course, the line down from the emigrant had to be established, but in her eyes the paternity and ancestry of the emigrant assumed the greater magnitude.

4
THE NEBRASKA AND MIDWEST

Her own special field of research was in heraldry, and for years she studied the meaning and interpretation of heraldic devices. Her "private" index to data on obscure families, made in her own characteristic handwriting on odd scraps of paper throughout the many years of her experience in handling books containing genealogical data, contained thousands of references to data buried in the proceedings and transactions of historical societies and other lurking places. To be permitted to use this index was the equivalent of receiving genealogical knighthood, for rarely were even the elect allowed access to it.

Gibbs, of Princeton, Illinois, says that she was a descendant of one of the Mayflower families. No proof of this has yet been found, as her parentage has not been determined.
William Gibbs and his wife moved to Sterling, Massachusetts, where their children were born. Later they removed to a farm lying between Guilford and Norwich, New York. They were Presbyterians.
