Transcribed by Mrs. Nellie M. (Throop) Magee, of Lincoln, Nebraska.
The Johnson family Bible originally belonged to Andrew and Mary Johnson, who were married at Thorndyke, Maine, 26 November, 1840. The family were living in Albany, Wisconsin, in 1863 when the oldest daughter, Ellen, was married. In 1865, Andrew Johnson and his oldest son, Rodney, who had served in the Civil War, came to Nebraska and selected homesteads near Valparaiso. They returned to their home, then at Geneseo, Illinois, and the next spring brought the family to Nebraska in covered wagons drawn by oxen, arriving late in the evening of 31 May, 1966. With them came the married daughter, Ellen, and her husband, Henry E. Throop. In 1867, Andrew Johnson and Henry E. Throop had the contract for making the doors and windows of the first Nebraska State Capitol Building. Andrew Johnson was the first postmaster at Valparaiso. After the death of Andrew and Mary Johnson the Bible was given to the oldest daughter, Mrs. Ellen M. Throop, who died in 1927. The Bible is now in the possession of the youngest son, Albert Little Johnson, owner of the Crete Mills, Crete, Nebraska. In transcribing the records in this Bible notes have been added; these appear in square brackets.

It is with a great deal of pleasure that we announce the publication of The Gates And Allied Families, which constitutes Volume Two of The Dawes-Gates Ancestral Lines. This is the work of Mrs. Mary Walton Ferris on which she has been engaged for about ten years. We have had only a glimpse of the published book, although we have from time to time examined portions of it in printer's proof and have discussed parts of it with Mrs. Ferris during the five years of our acquaintance with her. It immediately takes its place among the outstanding genealogical works published in America, and places Mrs. Ferris among the foremost ranking genealogists of the world. It is more than a bare recording of names and dates - the popular conception of a genealogy - it is virtually a history of the times of the people concerned, since Mrs. Ferris has dug up many interesting facts about the daily life of these individuals. Volume One of The Dawes-Gates Ancestral Lines, is to be published later as The Dawes and Allied Families. At that time we hope to give a more comprehensive review of the work as a whole.
Mr. Byron Barnes Horton, of Sheffield, Pennsylvania, has just published The Ancestors And Descendants of Zachariah
