of the University of Nebraska, in 1892. He holds the degrees of: B. S., June, 1896, University of Nebraska; A. M., June, 1897, University of Nebraska; Ph. D., Friedrichs Wilhelm University, Berlin, 1900. He was also a student at Cambridge University, England, in 1900. During his college days he was a member of the Union Literary Society, Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Xi, and was president of his senior class at the University of Nebraska; he was halfback on his class football team, 1894-95-96.
He served as instructor, assistant professor, and professor of physics at the University of Nebraska, all since 1900, and is now professor of experimental physics. He is a member of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce, the Knife and Fork Club, the Nebraskana Society, and the University Club. He holds membership in the American Association of University Professors, having served as president of the Nebraska section in 1912-13, is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Physical Society. He is affiliated with the First Plymouth Congregational Church, is a member of Red Cross, and the Republican party.
His marriage to Amy Celesta Bruner was solemnized at West Point, Cuming County, Nebraska, July 22, 1903. Mrs. Almy, who is an author and poet of some distinction, was born at West Point, February 13, 1875. Her father, Uriah Bruner, was regent of the University of Nebraska. They have one daughter, Constance Ida, born February 5, 1907, who married Harold L. Kipp of Lincoln.
Dr. Almy is the author of numerous articles on research problems in physics, published in the Philosophical Magazine, London, and Physical Review. Residence: Lincoln.
Clara Christine Altman
Clara Christine Altman, dean of women at Hastings College, was born at Webber, Kansas, December 25, 1889, daughter of Samuel and Olive Oatman (Cribbs) Altman. Her father was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, July 1, 1852, and is of Dutch descent. Her mother, also a native of Lancaster County, was born August 5, 1860, and is descended from Lord Say, who formed the Saybrook Colony from England.
Miss Altman was graduated from high school at Emporia, Kansas, in 1908, and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Emporia College, in 1912. She thereafter took post graduate work at Columbia University, Paris University and the University of Madrid, and in 1924, was awarded her Master's degree from the University of Chicago. During her college career she held various class offices, and was made a member of Kappa Delta Pi.
A resident of Nebraska for the past ten years, Miss Altman first came to Hastings as a teacher of modern languages which position she has held since. She was appointed dean of women at Hastings College at the end of her first year. Her professional associations include the National Association of Deans of Women, and the Nebraska State Association of Deans of Women, of which she was president in 1929. She is a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hastings, and was recently elected to life membership in the Nebraskana Society.
Miss Altman enjoys golf, tennis and hiking, and her hobby is the cello. Residence: Hastings.
Henry Altschuler
Born at Madison, Nebraska, January 21, 1883, Henry Altschuler is the son of Solomon and Mary (Wertheim) Altschuler. His father, who was a farmer, was born near Posen, Germany, and died at Omaha, Nebraska, July 21, 1899; he came to this country in 1855. His mother, who was of Jewish descent, was born at Darmstadt, Germany, and died at Omaha, December 17, 1928.
Mr. Altschuler is a merchant at Madison, Nebraska. He has been a director of the Nebraska Federation of Retailers, is a director of the Nebraska Mutual Burglar Insurance Company, and vice president and director of the Associated Stores Wholesale Company, Inc. He holds membership in the Madison County Historical Society, the National Geographic Society, the Madison Country Club, the Traveling Men's Protective Association, and the Nebraskana Society.
He is district chairman for the Boy Scouts, is a 32nd degree Mason and Shriner, has served as president of the Community Club, and has been treasurer of the Madison County Fair Association. Prior to the World War period he was a first lieutenant in Company H, 4th Nebraska Infantry, and later was county chairman and state director of Near East Relief. His hobby is reading, and his sports include hunting and fishing.
His marriage to Ada Nathan occurred at Des Moines, Iowa, December 27, 1906. She was born at Oskaloosa, Iowa, January 25, 1880, daughter of Moses A. and Hattie Nathan. Residence: Madison. (Photograph in Album).
Otis Theodore Alvison
Otis Theodore Alvison, banker, was born at Bloomfield, Iowa, October 13, 1881. His father, James L. Alvison was born in New York City, July 10, 1846. He was an educator of English descent, who married Charlotte H. Hancock. He died at Long Beach, California, September 12, 1928. Charlotte Hancock Alvison was born on the Ohio River near Corn Island, Indiana, March 21, 1851, and is living in Long Beach. She is also of English descent.
Otis T. Alvison was educated in the public schools of Omaha, and was graduated from Omaha High School in 1899. In August of that year he entered the employ of the Omaha National Bank as a clerk. He has been promoted through various positions to that of vice president which position he has held for the past two years.
He was married to Eleanor Southard at Council Bluffs, Iowa, on December 26, 1906. Mrs. Alvison was born at Morrison, Illinois, and is of Scotch and early American ancestry. They have one daughter, Charlotte Jane, born September 20, 1910.
Mr. Alvison is a Republican. He is a member of the Scottish Rite and Shrine bodies and is also affiliated with the Elks and is a member of the Lions Club. He is active in the civic life of the city and is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, and is treasurer of the Nebraska Humane Society. His clubs are the Omaha Athletic, the Omaha and the Happy Hollow Country. Residence: Omaha.
Ernest Capron Ames
Ernest C. Ames was born at Lincoln, Nebraska, June 14, 1875, and has lived in the state since that time. He has been engaged in the active practice of law at Lincoln, since 1898. His father, John Henry Ames, who was a lawyer and supreme court counsellor, was born in Vermont, of English descent, February 12, 1847, and died at Lincoln, January 18, 1911. His mother was born in Ohio, July 26, 1840, and died at Lincoln. Her ancestry was Dutch and English
Mr. Ames was graduated from the Lincoln High School in 1892. He was granted his A. B. degree, 1896, and A. M., 1898, at the University of Nebraska where he was a member of Beta Theta Pi, Phi Delta Phi, and Theta Nu Epsilon. He has been a practicing lawyer since his graduation from college and was United States Referee in Bankruptcy. He is now vice president and actuary of the Bankers Life Insurance Company of Nebraska. Politically, he is an independent.
He was married to Grace Alsyne Andrews at Fairbury, Nebraska, October 3, 1907. Mrs. Ames was born at Ann Arbor, Michigan, November 29, 1880, of English descent. There are two children, John Henry, born January 12, 1911; and Margaret Capron, born January 21, 1909.

Carl Gideon Amick, physician and surgeon, was born at Grand Island, Nebraska, July 11, 1896, son of John William and Lillie Mae (Hall) Amick. The father, who is a retired railroad conductor of German origin, was born at Moberly, Missouri, September 16, 1862. His wife, born at Napoleon, Ohio, May 20, 1868, is of Scotch-Irish descent.
Educated in the grade schools of Grand Island, Kearney and St. Paul, Carl Gideon Amick was graduated from high school at Loup City, in 1915. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Nebraska in 1919, and his Doctor of Medicine degree in 1921. He is a member of the Silver Lynx and of Phi Rho Sigma.
Admitted to practice October 1, 1922, Dr. Amick is now owner and physician and surgeon in charge of the Loup City Hospital and district surgeon for the Union Pacific Railroad. He is medical examiner for the National Red Cross, a member of the Custer County, Nebraska State and American Medical Associations, and holds the rank of first lieutenant in the Medical Reserve Corps. He is a Mason, is fond of hunting and fishing, and enjoys reading.
On November 10, 1923, he was married to Emily Clara Wanek, at Loup City. Mrs. Amick, who is of Bohemian descent, was born at Milligan, Nebraska, February 21, 1901. B. W. Ammerman
B. W. Ammerman was born at Plymouth, Nebraska, February 19, 1888, the son of Winfield and Ida (Shindoll) Ammerman His father, who was a farmer, died at Plymouth, in 1922; his ancestry was German and Irish.
Mr. Ammerman has been manager of the Scotia Independent Telephone Company for the past 21 years. He holds membership in the Commercial Club and the Red Cross, is a member of the Village Board of Scotia, Nebraska, is affiliated with the Scotia Methodist Church, and holds membership in the Shrine body of the Masons. His hobbies are reading and mechanics and his favorite sport is baseball. He is also director of the Scotia Municipal Band.
On November 22, 1910, he was married at Plymouth, Nebraska, to Alvina Williamina Sperling, who was born at DeWitt, Nebraska, August 22, 1892. One daughter was born to them: La Verna, May 13, 1914, who died July is, 1921. Residence: Scotia.
Mildred M. Ammerman
Mildred M. Ammerman, a resident of Nebraska for the past 50 years, was born at Luthersburg, Clarfield County, Pennsylvania, December 8, 1870, the daughter of Walter C. and Elizabeth S. (Pentz) Parker. Her father, a merchant was born at Crawford, Pennsylvania, April 8, 1814; his Scotch and Irish ancestors came to this country before the Revolution; he died at Eickingville, Pennsylvania, April 8, 1914. Her mother was born at Luthersburg September 21, 1844, of German Parentage, and died at Reynolds, Jefferson County, Nebraska, July 8, 1900.
Mrs. Ammerman attended public school and later was a student at the Lincoln Normal College, Lincoln, Nebraska. She is affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church in which she has been a member of the board of stewards for the past 12 years. She holds membership in the Degree of Honor, Daughters of the American Revolution, Welfare Club, and the Nebraskana Society. She is a Republican.
Of her marriage to U. S. Ammerman one child was born: Helen, born May 19, 1900, who married Paul A. Ude. Residence: Reynolds.
Charles DeWitt Ammon
Charles DeWitt Ammon was born at Raleigh, Saline County, Illinois, June 6, 1887, the son of John Franklin and Adele (Douglas) Ammon. His father, who was for many years a railroad agent, and a merchant, is of German ancestry. His mother, who was born March 3, 1863, and is still living, is of Scotch descent.
Mr. Ammon was graduated from the high school at Benton, Illinois, May, 1903, where he was active in debating and oratorical events. He was in a railroad office for a time; managed a grocery store at Sidell, Illinois, 1904-05; was engaged in the hardware business, 1907-12; and since 1913 has been a manufacturer. He is the owner of the Easy Manufacturing Company at Lincoln, at this time.
He was united in marriage to Emah B. Bruns at Elcampo, Texas, June 23, 1910. Mrs. Ammon, whose ancestry is German, was born at Elcampo, July 18, 1889. They have two children: Robert, born June 8, 1918; and William, born November 3, 1923.
Mr. Ammon is a member of the Lincoln Chamber of Commerce and the Kiwanis Club. He served as county chairman of the Butler County Red Cross in 1918. He is a member of the Modern Woodmen of America and the Young Men's Christian Association. He is a Mason. He is affiliated with the Shrine Country Club, and his sports are golf and hand ball. Residence: Lincoln.
John R. Ammon
John R. Ammon was born at Leavenworth, Indiana, November 25, 1860, the son of George W. and Nancy C. (Peckinpaugh) Ammon. His father, who was a farmer, was born at Madison, Indiana, February 22, 1819, and died at Emmetsburg, Iowa, June 12, 1887; he was vice president and a stockholder in the Ammon, Scott & Company manufacturing concern. His mother, who was president of the local Women's Christian Temperance Union at Emmetsburg, was born at Cape Sandy, Indiana, May 18, 1825, and died at Hammond, Nebraska November 14, 1910.
Mr. Ammon received his education in Iowa where he attended public grade school and a private academy. He was a teacher for a time and engaged in the creamery business at Emmetsburg from 1880 to 1884. He holds membership in the Ancient Order of United Workmen at Hammond, Nebraska, is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and is affiliated with Sybrant Evangelical Church. He has been a farmer near Hammond for many years
A Republican, Mr. Ammon served as Republican county chairman, was precinct committeeman for a time, and has attended various state conventions of his party as delegate. He has lived in this state continuously since 1884, and has taken an active part in the progress of his community.
His marriage to Ida Estella Sybrant was solemnized at Sybrant, Nebraska, November 11, 1889. Mrs. Ammon, who is the daughter of David O. and Rozilla Gilbert Sybrant, was born at Guy's Mills, Pennsylvania, July 25, 1864. Their children are: Ben B., born August 29, 1890, who married Estella R. Barker; Harold G., born February 15, 1892, who married Addie A. Welton; and Nancy L., born October 23, 1902. Both sons are farmers in Rock County, Nebraska. Residence: Hammond.

Emma Tracy Amos
Emma Tracy Amos, daughter of Asa and Mary Ann (Shields) Tracy, was born at Cheyenne, Wyoming, March 31, 1881, and came with her family to Kimball County, Nebraska, about 1882. Her father was born at Buffalo, New York, and died at Cheyenne, Wyoming, January 26, 1888. He was a stockman. His father was Irish and his mother English of the Peacock family of Buffalo, a relative of Sir Walter Peacock of London, England.
Mary Ann Shields was born in Illinois, August 2, 1853, and died at Pine Bluff, Wyoming, February 39, 1906. Her father was German and her mother English. The family were early pioneers in Nebraska.
Emma Tracy attended public school at Ogden, Utah, Grand Island, Nebraska, and Cheyenne, Wyoming. On November 5, 1902, she was married to Horace Churchill Amos, a stockman. He was born at Racine, Wisconsin, May 7, 1877. There are two children, Marjorie, born April 3, 1907; and Marian, born May 7, 1912. Marjorie is stenographer for the American State Bank. Marian is graduated from high school.
Mr. Amos is a member of the Episcopal Church and a life member of the Nebraskana Society. Residence: Kimball.
Ross Amspoker
Ross Amspoker, a prominent lawyer of Springview, Nebraska, was born at Nodaway, Iowa, November 18, 1874, the son of Samuel Amspoker and Mary Jane (Caldwell) Amspoker. His father, who was born in Hancock, Ohio, in 1837, and died at Springview, May 28, 1915, was a farmer and stockman who took an active part in political and civic affairs in his community; he served as county treasurer of Keya Paha County for four years. His mother, whose Scotch and Irish ancestors settled in Kentucky, in the early history of the state, was born in Harrison County, Ohio, May 16, 1842, and died at Springview, November 10, 1930.
Mr. Amspoker received his legal education in the college of law of the University of Nebraska. He has been active in the practice of law in northern Nebraska at Springview since his admission to the bar in 1903, and owns several farms in Keya Paha County. A Republican, he served as county treasurer of Keya Paha County for four years, was county attorney for six years, acted as state representative from 1923 to 1925, and was state senator from 1927 to 1931.
He is a member of the local Red Cross, is affiliated with the Congregational Church, and holds membership in the Nebraska State Historical Society. Mr. Amspoker has been interested in banking and farm loan activities for a number of years
On November 14, 1906, he married Getha McKee at Bonesteel, South Dakota. Mrs. Amspoker was born in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, December 17, 1881. Their two children are: Bernice, born October 23, 1907, who was graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1929; and Ruth Frances, born October 31, 1910, who was graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1931. Residence: Springviev.
Harry John Amundson
Harry John Amundson, leading merchant in Hartington, Nebraska, was born at Hartington, on June 8, 1890, son of Andrew and Margaret Ellen (Morrison) Amundson.
Andrew Amundson was born at Occonomonoc, Wisconsin, of American descent for several generations, and engaged in the mercantile business in Cedar County for many years prior to his death on March 28, 1928. His wife, Margaret, was a native of Illinois, whose family was of early American stock.
Educated in the public and high schools of Hartington, after finishing school he entered the business established by his father, which he has since owned and operated. The business was established in 1885, the first general merchandise store in Hartington.
He is a Republican. During the World War he served eighteen months in the United States Army and is a member of the American Legion. A Catholic, he is a member of the local church, as well as the Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club and the Country Club. He is fond of golf and enjoys reading.
Mr. Amundson was married to Alice Loretta Griffin at Des Moines, Iowa, June 8, 1931. Residence: Hartington.
A. E. Andersen
A. E. Andersen was born in Fremont, Nebraska, February 11, 1882, son of Christian S. and Maren J. (Petersen) Andersen. Christian Andersen was born in Denmark, March 28, 1840, and came to the United States in 1861. He was a farmer who served with the First Nebraska Cavalry during the Civil War. He died March 6, 1922. His wife, Maren, was born in Denmark, January 8, 1846, and died January 21, 1902.
Mr. Andersen attended the Fremont public schools, and was graduated from Fremont High School in 1900, when he became a grocery clerk. In 1904 he became bookkeeper for Eddy Brothers Department Store, and later became manager and buyer for them, severing his connection in 1917. He is now partner in the Brunswick Restaurant, and a director of the Equitable Building and Loan Association.
A Republican, Mr. Andersen was defeated for mayor in the Spring of 1917; in January, 1930, he became a member of the City Park Board, serving since that time. He is a director of the Young Men's Christian Association was vice president one year, and member of the board of managers 15 years. He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Fremont Ad Club (president 1915-16) and the Rotary Club (president 1930). His fraternal organization is Elks Lodge No. 514. He is a member of the First Baptist Church, and contributor to the Red Cross and Salvation Army. His sports are football and baseball.
On August 15, 1904, he was married to Orpha Gertrude Palmer, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Palmer, at Wahoo. Mrs. Andersen was born at Stratton, Nebraska, July 6, 1886, of English and Irish descent. She was a milliner prior to her marriage. There is one son, William Dale, born January 21, 1913, who is a sophomore at Midland College. Residence: Fremont.
Charles J. Andersen
Charles J. Andersen, president of the Andersen Company, Incorporated, was born at Herslev, Denmark, March 13, 1864. He is the son of Soren and Christiane Andersen, the former of Kolding, Denmark, born July 6, 1838. He was a saddlemaker and carriage manufacturer, and an officer in the Danish Army. He served in the Danish-German War of 1864. He came to the United States 36 years ago, and died at Omaha on December 7, 1925. His wife, Christiane, was born at Kolding, March 11, 1839, and died at Omaha, January 20, 1913.
Mr. Andersen was educated in the public schools of Denmark until he reached the age of 18 years. He was married on June 1, 1924, to Leda Flick. Mrs. Andersen was born at York, Nebraska, and attended the York public and high schools.
Since coming to America in 1884 he has been engaged in business in Omaha, from 1884-87 in the carriage business. In 1901 he incorporated under the name of Andersen-Millard Company, and from 1904-29 under the name of Andersen Company. He is now president of Andersen Company, Incorporated.
