don, Henry County, Iowa, January 4, 1846, and died at Union, Nebraska, September 19, 1918. He was a farmer.

His mother, of Irish descent, was born at Afton, Union County, Iowa, December 1, 1854, and died at Union, Nebraska, February 26, 1926.

Mr. Banning was graduated from the Lincoln Business College, and the University of Nebraska. At the present time he is cashier of the Bank of Union, at Union, Nebraska. He is a member of the Agricultural Achievement Hall of the University of Nebraska, and is chairman of the board of education at Union.

On September 6, 1899, he married Jennie Elizabeth Roush, at Keosauqua, Van Buren County, Iowa. Mrs. Banning, who was a stenographer before her marriage, was born at Keosauqua, November 17, 1870. She is of German descent. One child, Hollis, was born October 2, 1902, and is now bookkeeper at the bank of Union.

In the World War Mr. Banning was food administrator for Cass County. He is a member of the Chamber of Commerce, the Modern Woodmen of America, and the Masons. He was State Senator for 2nd District from 1909-11, also from 1923 to 1931. Mr. Banning is a Democrat. He has also been a member on Nebraska State Board of Agriculture for 19 years and at present one of Board of Managers. Residence: Union.

Ira Ellsworth Banta

Ira E. Banta, leading banker, was born at Adams, Indiana, March 4, 1869, the son of Daniel H. and Priscilla (Wheeler) Banta. His father was born at Cynthiana, Kentucky, in 1807, and died at Plainville, Indiana, in August, 1886. During his life he was a clergyman, miller and a farmer. His parents were born in Virginia. Priscilla Banta was born in Kentucky, in 1332, and died at Plainville, in 1890. Her parents were also born in Virginia.

Mr. Banta spent his boyhood days in Indiana, where he attended an elementary school. He later attended Franklin Baptist College at Franklin, Indiana, and National Normal University at Lebanon, Ohio.

A resident of Nebraska since April 4, 1887, he was a country school teacher, deputy county clerk of Polk County for two years, and for thirty-nine years has been associated with the Stromsburg Bank, first as assistant cashier, then as cashier, and for the last seventeen years as president.

On November 28, 1900, he was united in marriage to Mary Alice Roberts at Pilot Grove, Missouri, where she was born October 22, 1872. Mrs. Banta died at Lincoln, Nebraska, February 5, 1919. Three children were born to them: Harold E., born February 9, 1902, who is married to Edith Kiem; Ruth E., born November 18, 1903, and Wallace E., born June 29, 1907, a graduate of the University of Nebraska in 1929, who is married to Peggy Happ. Harold E., is employed by the General Electric Company at Chicago. Wallace E., by the B. F. Goodrich Rubber Company at Boston, Massachusetts, and Ruth E., resides at home.

During the World War Mr. Banta was chairman of all liberty loan drives in Polk County. He is a member of the Red Cross. the Community Club, and the Nebraskana Society. Golfing, football and baseball are his favorite sports and fishing and hunting are his hobbies.

Mr. Banta was married to Emma Olson Danielson on February 12, 1927. Residence: Stromsburg.

Merle Albert Banta

Merle Albert Banta, manager of the Bridgeport Bottling and Storage Company, was born at Chicago, Illinois, November 11, 1891, son of Albert A. and Florence Emma (McMillian) Banta.

In 1913 Mr. Banta was graduated from the high school of Salem, Iowa, and attended Whittier Academy from which he was graduated in 1918. He afterward attended Iowa Wesleyan College two years.

On August 31, 1920, he was married to Dorothy Lamme at Mount Pleasant, Iowa. She was born at Mount Pleasant, March 4, 1898. There are two children, Richard, born July 7, 1925; and Barbara Anne, born April 4, 1928.

At the present time Mr. Banta is serving as president and general manager of the Bridgeport Bottling and Storage Company, Incorporated. He is a member of the Lions Club, the Masons and the American Legion. For two years he held the rank of second lieutenant in the Motor Transport Corps; this was during the World War. He is fond of golf. Residence: Morrill.

Harvey Edgar Barbee

Harvey Edgar Barbee, who has been prominent in educational affairs in Nebraska for the past fifteen years, has lived in this state all his life and has taken an active part in civic projects in his community. He was born at Fairbury, Jefferson County, Nebraska, May 18, 1889, the son of Charles M. and Rosella (Waymire) Barbee. His father, who was born at Portsmouth, Ohio, in 1854, and died at Hebron, Thayer County, Nebraska, July 21, 1931, was a grain dealer; his French ancestors settled in Virginia in the early history of the country and later moved to Ohio.

Mr. Barbee, who is county superintendent of schools in Thayer County, attended the public schools of Jefferson County, and later was a student at York College and Peru State Teacher's College. He was awarded a professional state life certificate by the state department in 1917, and in 1921 received the city life certificate. He has always been connected with educational activities and has held the following professional positions: teacher in Cherry County schools, 1910-11; teacher in Thayer County, 1912-13; superintendent of public schools Byron, Nebraska, 1916-18; and county superintendent of schools in Thayer County, 1918 to date.

For four years Mr. Barbee served as president of the interstate spelling contest, comprising the states of Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, and South Dakota, and was chairman of the state fair spelling committee for five years. He has devoted a great deal of time to writing and is the author of various songs, short stories, and short novels, among them: We Are Coming Beck to You, Montana, a song published in 1918; My Carnation, 1928, a song, Star of Liberty. 1928; The Lure of the Sandhills, published in serial form in a professional publication, 1928.

His marriage to Mary W. Ahlschwede was solemnized at Hebron, June 9, 1917. Mrs. Barbee was a teacher in Thayer County Schools before her marriage and took an active interest in music. She is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church at Hebron, has taught in the Sunday School since girlhood, and is active in various women's affairs in the church. She holds membership in the Nebraska Writers Guild, the Eastern Star, of which she was secretary at one time, and the Hebron Woman's Club, of which she is an active member. Mrs. Barbee is interested in writing, and is the author of two stories, both of which have been published: When Johnny Comes Marching Home Again; and Stony Justice.

To their marriage two children were born: Jack Mahlon, born July 31, 1918; and Gwyn Stanley, born October 23, 1919. Both of the boys are students in the Hebron Public School.

Mr. Barbee holds membership in Pi Gamma Mu, the Presbyterian Church, where he has been superintendent of the Sunday School, is a member of the Masons and Odd Fellows, is affiliated with the Eastern Star. He has been a member of the Nebraska Writers Guild for several years and is a member of the Nebraskana Society. Residence: Hebron. (Photograph on Page 75).
