Arabic Order, Nobles of the Mystic Shrine at Lincoln. As a member of the last mentioned body he attended the national conclave held at Des Moines, Iowa, in 1920. At present he is serving as director and vice president of the Farmers' Grain Elevator of Nehawka, having been recently re-elected to the office. Residence: Nehawka. (Photograph Page 116).

William Henry Berger

William Henry Berger, son of August Frederick and Lucy Ann (Murdock) Berger, was born at Dakota City, Nebraska, March 9, 1866. His father, born in Behren, Germany, August 24, 1832, came to America in 1859, and served with Company I, 2nd Nebraska Cavalry during the Civil War. A pioneer farmer, he died at Phillipsburg, Kansas, October 24, 1910. His wife, Lucy Ann was born in Toronto, Canada, April 22, 1840, daughter of John Murdock, who was of Scottish birth and Hannah Hutchinson, daughter of Lord Hutchinson of England. She died at Dakota City, November 9, 1921.

Educated in the public schools, Mr. Berger has been a farmer since early manhood. He is active in agricultural organizations, and is president of the Omadi Cooperative Grain Company and a member of the board of directors of the Midwest Research Laboratory of Sioux City.

On January 18, 1893, he was married to Anna Maria Ochander at Homer, Nebraska. Mrs. Berger was born at Homer, January 15, 1874, and to them were born the following children: Laura E., born August 3, 1894, married Orville L. Legg; William M., born February 13, 1897, who married Jennie Esther Thomas; Francis F., born June 8, 1900, died February 7, 1901; Edna M., born December 9, 1901, who married George E. Billgren; Anna M., born March 30, 1904, married Ross Gourley; George E., born July 27, 1906; and Maurice E., born December 16, 1910. All of the children are farming except William, who is an engineer and Maurice who is serving in the United States Navy.

During the World War Mr. Berger was active in Red Cross, Loan and other drives. He is a member of the First Methodist Episcopal Church at Dakota City, a member of the South Sioux City Chamber of Commerce, and is past noble grand of the Odd Fellows and a member of the Rebekahs. Charles Emil Berggren

A resident of Kearney County, Nebraska, for the past 45 years, Charles Emil Berggren, born May 25, 1877, is the son of Gustaf and Lena Berggren. His father, Who was a blacksmith, was born in Sweden, October 1, 1849, and died at Ragan, Nebraska, August 14, 1925. He moved to Holdrege, Nebraska, in the fall of 1885. His mother was born in Sweden and died there in 1880.

Mr. Berggren located in Wilcox in 1903, where he became a blacksmith and a machinist. He is a member of the Modern Woodmen of America.

On August 17, 1904, he was married to Ella C. Carlson of Wilcox. To them were born four children: Ralph Kenneth, born July 28, 1906, who married Merna Evelyn Kailey of Holdrege, Nebraska, on June 16, 1925; Clarence Harvey born March 5, 1909, who married Dorothy E. Termin, of Wilcox, August 14, 1931; Dorothy Marie, February 6, 1917; and Margaret Alvena, born December 19, 1919. Residence: Wilcox.

Joseph Fredrick Berggren

Joseph Fredrick Berggren, lawyer in Nebraska for nearly 39 years, was born at Wahoo, Saunders County, Nebraska August 20, 1877, the son of Nils B. and Hanna (Johnston) Berggren. His father, who was born in Sweden, September 19, 1842, and died at Wahoo, December 6, 1899, was a landscape gardener, farmer, and stockraiser; he was a pioneer in Saunders County and was prominent in the advancement of his community. His mother was born in Sweden, July 28, 1847, and now resides in Wahoo

Mr. Berggren was graduated from the Wahoo High School, and was awarded the A. B. degree 1903, and LL. B., 1903 at the University of Nebraska where he held membership in Phi Delta Phi. He is now attorney for several corporations in addition to his regular law practice at Wahoo. A Democrat, he served as county attorney of Saunders County from 1910 to 1914. He is a member of the Wahoo Lions Club, the State Bar Society, Odd Fellows, and Knights of Pythias.

During the World War, Mr. Berggren served as a member of the Civilian Relief Committee in Saunders County, and was active in Red Cross work. He is affiliated with the Congregational Church at Wahoo. He is interested in agriculture, and his favorite sport is football.

His marriage to Elva Gillilan, was solemnized at Wahoo, June 30, 1909. Mrs. Berggren was born at Linn, Iowa, January 6, 1886. They have one daughter, Josephine, born June 25, 1910. She is now teaching in the public school at Nebraska City. Residence: Wahoo.

Albert Bergland

For the past 44 years Albert Bergland has been engaged in farming near Loomis, Nebraska. He was born at Galesburg, Illinois, February 27, 1864, the son of Louis and Hannah (Erickson) Bergland, the former a contractor and builder. His father, who was descended from the Russian nobility, was born at Sundavall, Sweden, December 5, 1826, and died at Galesburg, Illinois, in June, 1897. His mother was born at Silverborg, Sweden, January 20, 1836, and died at Galesburg, February 20, 1923.

Mr. Bergland attended high school at Galesburg. He is a member of the Nebraskana Society, is affiliated with the Republican party, and holds membership in the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. His hobby is reading.

On May 23, 1889, he was married at Denver, Colorado, to Augusta A. Edmunds who was born at Huskvarna, Sweden, February 16, 1867. They have five children: Ruth, born June 9, 1890, who married Edwin Davis; Eugene, born October 26, 1894; Alice, born January 5, 1897, who married Howard A. Sherman; May, born September 8, 1898, who married Earl F. Sherman; and Bert, born December 18, 1908. Residence: Loomis.

Edwin A. Bergman

Edwin A. Bergman, prominent farmer, was born in Kimball County, Nebraska, November 26, 1886, son of Andrew and Johanna (Sjobloom) Bergman.

The father was born in Sweden, June 3, 1852, and pioneered in western Nebraska among the first settlers in 1885. He is a retired rancher. His wife, also born in Sweden, in August, 1850, was a pioneer also in the north divide of Kimball County.

Mr. Bergman attended country school through the 8th grade and was graduated from Kimball High School in 1904. While there he was active as a member of the baseball team.

Mr. Bergman was born on the farm on which he now resides, was the first extensive wheat grower in western Nebraska and an exponent of summer tilling. He is the director of school district No. 13 of Kimball County, an ex-member of the board of regents of the Kimball City High School, and a member of the farm bureau and county fair board. He is a former member of the Lions Club at Kimball and is now a member of the Kimball Country Club. During the late war, he was chairman of local loan drives.
