Wells at Washington, Kansas. There are three children, Vera, born October 24, 1897, who married Arthur Blum; Eunice, born December 18, 1904, who married Joel I. Smith; and Marjorie, born July 24, 1910, who married Vance Beghtol.

Dr. Carter is United States pension examiner. He is a member of the Nebraska State Medical Association, the Red Cross, the Lions Club, the Odd Fellows, and the O'Neill Country Club. He was president of the board of education from 1928-31. Residence: O'Neill.


Thomas Hough Carter

A resident of Nebraska for the past fifty-seven years, Thomas H. Carter was born at Richmond, New York, June 16, 1872. He is the son of Oliver France and Harriet (Mallet) Carter, the former a native of Burwell, England. Oliver France Carter was born on December 24, 1833, and came to America in 1849, and to Nebraska in 1873. He was a miller and milling executive until his death at Ashland, in February, 1883. His wife, Harriet, was born in Richmond, New York, in 1841, and died at Ashland, in January, 1891. She was of English descent.

Thomas H. Carter attended the public schools of Ashland, until 1885, and during that year was water boy on railroad construction. From 1886 to 1889, he was a farm hand, and from 1889 to 1892, was helper in the Ashland Mill and Electric Light Company. In 1892, he became associated with the Wetherald Brothers as second miller, and from 1903, until 1908, was superintendent for them.

In the year 1908, Mr. Carter purchased the mill, operating as Bozarth and Carter, and in 1918 became sole owner. He built the hydro-electric plant in 1921, disposing of it in 1924, and was one of the organizers of the Northern Nebraska Power Company in 1926. In addition he has newspaper interests and is the owner of considerable farm acreage.

Mr. Carter has always been active in Republican politics in Thayer County, serving as city councilman 1902-05, member of the board of education 1912-15, and as mayor of Hebron, 1915-18. During the World War he was county chairman of the Red Cross, chairman of the county council of defense and government appeal agent. He was the organizer of the Bull Moose party in Thayer County in 1912.

On July 15, 1893, Mr. Carter was married to Maude Rebecka Clarke, at Hebron. Mrs. Carter, who was born at Salem, Nebraska, December 10, 1873, died at Hebron, April 18, 1931. There were five children born to their union, three of whom are living: Edna, born February 20, 1895, married Will Long; Edith, born March 13, 1897, married William H. Bauman; Thomas, born September 9, 1901, died September 3, 1905; Adelene, born March 7, 1910; and Newton, born October 11, 1918, who died February 18, 1919. Residence: Hebron.


W. Lyndal Carter

One of the leading merchants at Columbus, Nebraska, is W. Lyndal Carter who was born at Chariton, Iowa, January 10, 1901, the son of Edward Grant and Ida (McMains) Carter. His father, who was born at Chariton, February 9, 1872, of French descent, has served as a furniture salesman for 32 years and is now engaged in the furniture business independently; he is descended, through the maternal line, from Robert Edwards of Scotland. His mother, whose ancestry is Scotch and Irish, was born at Chariton, February 11, 1877.

Mr. Carter was graduated from the Columbus High School in 1919, and is the owner and manager of the Baer Shoe company of that city. He holds membership in the Community Orchestra, the City Band, and the Chamber of Commerce of Columbus. He is affiliated with St. Bonaventures Catholic Church, holds membership in The Nebraskana Society, and is interested in music and reading. His favorite sport is hunting.

His marriage to Kathryn Louise Greisen occurred at Columbus, April 24, 1923. Mrs. Carter, who is of German descent, was born at Columbus, April 16, 1902. They have three children: Roberta Jean, born April 16, 1924; Virginia Lee, born May 14, 1928; and Kathryn Joyce, born December 30, 1926, who died January 20, 1927. Residence: Columbus.


Carl C. Cartney

Carl C. Cartney, banker and lawyer of Lincoln, was born in Clay County, Nebraska, December 24, 1881, the son of George and Bridget (Carrabine) Cartney. His father, who was born in Ireland, died at Tilden, Antelope County, Nebraska, in 1910. His mother, whose ancestry is Irish, was born in Canada.

Mr. Cartney was graduated from the Lincoln High School; attended the state normal school; and in 1922 was graduated from the University of Nebraska with the degree LL. B. He was elected to membership in Phi Alpha Delta. He has lived in Nebraska all his life and from 1905 to 1919, was engaged in the banking business, holding the following positions: assistant cashier; cashier; vice president; and president.

He was united in marriage with Grace L. Walker at Grand Island, Hall County, Nebraska, June 16, 1915, Mrs. Cartney, whose ancestry is German, was born in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. She is a banker. They have a daughter, Kathryn, born January 1, 1917.

Mr. Cartney was active in loan drives and Red Cross activities during the late war. He is a member of the Lancaster County Bar Society; the Nebraska State Bar Society; and the American Bar Association. He is a member of the York Rite and Shrine bodies of the Masons. He is a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church of Lincoln, and is independent politically. Residence: Lincoln.


Gilbert L. Carver

Gilbert L. Carver, who is engaged in the insurance business at Kearney, Nebraska, has lived in this state all his life. He was born at Cambridge, Nebraska, July 4, 1893, the son of Stephen L. and Nora Ann (Montgomery) Carver. His father, who is a retired farmer, was born at Nashville, Tennessee, April 8, 1861. His mother was born at Woodruff, Kansas, November 20, 1869.

Mr. Carver attended the East Valley Rural School in Red Willow County, Nebraska, was graduated from the Cambridge High School in 1914, and later attended York United Brethren College and the Lincoln Business College. He is engaged in the insurance business at Kearney, independently, and takes a prominent part in civic affairs there. He is a member of the Kearney Chamber of Commerce, is affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church of Kearney, and holds membership in the Parent Teachers Association and the local Masonic Lodge. He is serving as a member of the Kearney City Library Board at this time.

During the World War Mr. Carver served in the United States Army, and at this time is a member of the American Legion. His favorite sport is golfing. He is a member of the Democratic party and holds membership in The Nebraskana Society.

His marriage to Marguerite Grace Didriksen occurred at Kearney, June 9, 1920; she was born in the community, November 25, 1894. To them were born: Boyd William, April 11, 1923; and Doris Louise, January 9, 1925. Residence: Kearney.


Horace Jackson Cary

Horace Jackson Cary was born in Buffalo County. Nebraska, December 27, 1888, the son of Lyman and Lavina (Rines) Cary.

His father, who was a stockman and farmer, served as county treasurer of Buffalo County for three terms

and was treasurer of Tama County, Iowa, for two terms; he was born at Turner, Maine, July 18, 1847, and died at Kearney, Nebraska, December 10, 1924; he was a direct descendant of Governor William Bradford, John Alden and Elder William Brewster, all of Mayflower fame, and was descended from Daniel French, Cornelius Waldo, and Ephriam Cary. His mother was descended from Daniel Jackson of Revolutionary times.

Mr. Cary was graduated from the Kearney High School in 1906, and in 1910 received the B. S. degree at the University of Nebraska, where he majored in civil engineering. He is a stockman and farmer near Kearney, is past president of the Kearney Rotary Club, is president of the School Board, and is past secretary of the Farm Bureau. At this time he is president of the Ravenna Bank, and is a director in the Fort Kearney State Bank.

He holds membership in the local Parent-Teachers' Association, is a director in the Chamber of Commerce. and holds membership in the Country Club and the Masonic Lodge. Politically, he is independent.

On April 15, 1914, he married Lucile Elizabeth Nye at Kearney. Mrs. Cary, who was born at Kearney, March 27, 1894, is the daughter of Fred Allen Nye, a lawyer, and Helen Barlow Nye. She is past regent of the Fort Kearney chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, is vice state regent of that organization, and has served as state recording secretary and state auditor.

Among her Revolutionary ancestors were Iram Nye and Samuel Scott. They have three children: Helen Rines, born May 25, 1916; Margaret Zoe, born May 30, 1918; and Horace Jackson, born December 26, 1920. Residence: Kearney.


Jacob Casal

Jacob Casal, a farmer in Cedar County, Nebraska, for the past 44, years, was born at Schiers, Switzerland, April 22, 1870, the son of Jacob and Luisa (Senteler) Casal. His father, who was a clerk, was born at Schiers, in 1843, and died at Angeslem, France, 1870. His mother was born at Schiers, in 1844, and died at Davos, Switzerland, 1914.

Mr. Casal was graduated from school in 1886. He is a member of the Nebraskana Society, the Hope Reformed Church at Belden, and the Republican party.

He was married to Maria Rieder at Schiers, October 25, 1876; she was born in Switzerland, August 30, 1877. They have five children: Luisa, born October 11, 1897, who married Herman Benck; George, born March 7, 1899, who married Martha Cunningham; Barbara, born January 25, 1901, who married Carl Bring; Hilda, born January 23, 1903; and Emma, born June 22, 1907. Mr. Casal, who has extensive land interests, has always taken an extremely active interest in community affairs, particularly along agricultural lines. Resdence (sic): Belden.


Ernest Edwin Case

Ernest E. Case was born near Brighton, Iowa, September 9, 1869, the son of Samuel John and Mary Parthena (Horton) Case, and since 1871 has been a successful farmer in Nebraska. Coming to Nebraska with his parents and one brother, Charles, in a covered wagon where they homesteaded, he now lives with his sister, Maude. She is a member of Butler Johnson Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and has acted as regent.

His father, who was also a farmer, was born in Connecticut, November 17, 1842, and died near Sutton, Nebraska, May 13, 1912; he was descended from John Case who came to America from England in 1635 and was one of the founders of Simsbury, Connecticut. His mother was born near Fredonia, Ohio, June 2, 1841, and died near Sutton, April 13, 1922. She was descended from Barnabas Horton who came to America from England in 1640; John Howland and John Tilley, who came to this country on the Mayflower, were also ancestors.

Mr. Case received his education in the Sutton High School. He is a member of the local school board, the board of directors of the Sutton Farmers Elevator Company, and the Sutton Cooperative Oil Company and is its vice president. He is affiliated with the First Congregational Church of Sutton, and his political affiliation is with the Democratic Party. He was township assessor, 1895-96, and was elected a life member in the Nebraskana Society in 1931. Residence: Sutton.


James Dodds Case

James Dodd Case, physician and surgeon, was born in Adams County, Nebraska, August 2, 1875, son of Robert Gable and Louisa (Glidewell) Case. He attended public school at Bridgecreek, Missouri, and Liberty, Kansas, and in 1893, was graduated from the academy at Bennet, Nebraska. He attended Cotner University and in 1901 received his medical degree from that institution.

His marriage to Agnes Frances Morgan was solemnized at Bennet on March 25, 1897. Mrs. Case was born at Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. There are two children, Richard J., and Ruth.

Dr. Case has been in active practice since 1901. He is a member of the Eclectic Medical Society, the Young Men's Christian Association and the First Christian Church. He was secretary of the State Health Department, 1915-17; superintendent of the State Hospital for the Insane, 1917-18, and secretary of the Department of Public Welfare, 1923-24. Residence: Lincoln.


Elmer Fay Casebolt

Elmer Fay Casebolt, manager of the Thayer County Motor Company at Hebron, Nebraska, has always lived in this state. He was born on a farm in Thayer County, September 2, 1897, the son of William J. and Jennie (McMurphy) Casebolt. His father, who was a farmer, was born at Ashville, Kentucky, January 31, 1856, and died at Hebron, February 28, 1929; he was of English descent.

His mother, who was born at Lincoln, Illinois, May 19, 1869, of Scotch Irish parentage, is active in the P. E. O.'s and holds membership in the Order of Eastern Star. She now resides at Hebron where she was a business woman for many years.

Mr. Casebolt attended the Hebron High School and has always been in the automobile business in that community. For a number of years he was employed by the Thayer County Motor Company of which he is now manager.

His marriage to Hazel Richey was solemnized at Marysville, Kansas, May 22, 1918. Mrs. Casebolt, who was born at Waterville, Kansas, September 13, 1897, was a teacher in Thayer County schools prior to her marriage, and since then has been actively interested in women's affairs at Hebron. She holds membership in the Woman's Club, has assisted in various programs in church and social activities, and through her dramatic ability has contributed to many local entertainments. Of Irish and English descent, she is the daughter of Oscar A. and Emogene (Lawrence) Richey.

Their two children are: William Oscar, born December 26, 1920; and Robert Dean, born March 21, 1931. Mr. Casebolt is a Democrat, a Mason, and a member of the Nebraskana Society. With his wife he is a member of the First Presbyterian Church at Hebron and the Merrimix Club. He is interested in all outdoor sports, especially hunting and fishing. Residence: Hebron.

Roy L. Caskey

Roy Lucas Caskey, son of William and Barbara Ellen (Imes) Caskey, was born at North Bend, Iowa, February 15 and for thirty-six years has resided in Nebraska. Hs (sic) fater (sic) was born in Indiana, March 4, 1858, son of Robert and Susan (Freland) Caskey. William Caskey as a farmer and harness maker in earlier life, and later was with the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad.

Barbara Ellen Imes was born in Iowa, January 18: 1859 and died at Big Spring on March 10, 1930. She was the daughter of John and Barbara (Miller) Imes.

Roy Lucas Caskey was graduated from public school at Big Spring in the class of 1908, and first engaged in farming. Later he moved into the town of Big Spring and entered the electrical business. He hung the first light meter and pumped the first water in the town, and in 1920 was appointed city electrician. He held that position until 1927 when the light plant was sold to the public Service Company of Colorado, and was elected to the same position with that company.

Mr. Lucas is also serving as village clerk and water superintendent. He is a progressive Republican. He is a member of the Red Cross, the Odd Fellows and the Big Spring Golf Club and until 1930, when electricians were barred, was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America. His favorite sport is golf, while his hobby is photography. Residence: Big Spring. (Photograph on Page 226).


Jacob H. Casper

Jacob H. Casper, farmer and real estate dealer, was born at Benson, Illinois, January 6, 1861, the son of Garret and Teda (Conrad) Casper. Garrett Casper was born at Ostelburg, Aurich, Germany, September 27, 1821, and died at Milford, Illinois, June 24, 1901. He was a carpenter and a farmer. Teda Casper was born at Moorhousen, Eastfresland, Germany, January 26, 1841, and died at Bruning, March 26, 1929. She was the daughter of Dick and Emma (Poppenge) Conrad, who died in the early nineties.

On February 15, 1883, Jacob Casper was united in marriage with Augusta Taddiken, who was born at Wardewarden, Oldenburg, Germany, August 12, 1861. She is the daughter of H. R. and Magerta Taddiken. Mr. and Mrs. Casper have six children, C. J., who is married to Florence Patrow; Robert H., who is married to Agnes Russell; Tracy, who is married to Frank Kreizinger; John, who is married to Maude Niblack; Henry R., who is married to Louise Martin; and Fred W., who is married to Nona Bushnell.

A resident of Nebraska for forty-eight years, Mr. Casper was the justice of the peace in Butler County, for ten years, and has been a farmer and a real estate man, for many years.

He is a Democrat. His religious affiliation is with the American Trinity Lutheran Church at Bruning, Nebraska. He is a life member of the Nebraskana Society. Residence: Bruning.


Albert Thomas Cassel

Albert T. Cassel was born at Nebraska City, Nebraska, February 5, 1870, the son of Job and Mary (Harmon) Cassel. His father, who was a farmer and served as state representative from Otoe County, was born at Attica, Indiana, December 7, 1834, and died at Lincoln, May 8, 1922. His mother was born at New Marlboro, Massachusetts, August 20, 1845, and died at Lincoln, December 29, 1912.

Mr. Cassel attended a country school near Nebraska City until 1886; he was graduated from high school at Nebraska City in 1890; and in 1894 was awarded the S. B. degree at Doane College, Crete, Nebraska. He was a member of the local fraternity, Delta Kappa Pi, at Doane College. He worked on a farm until 1894 when he became night clerk for the Missouri Pacific Railway Company at Weeping Water, Nebraska. A year later he entered the Bank of Palmyra, at Palmyra, Nebraska, as assistant cashier. He served as assistant cashier of the Farmers Bank at Nebraska City for several years; was assistant cashier of the Anaconda Mines at Butte, Montana for five years; was traveling salesman for the Omaha Packing Company for one year; and was cashier of the Bank of Palmyra for nearly 20 years. He is now treasurer and business manager of Doane College at Crete.

He was united in marriage with Mary Alvira Richards at Lincoln, October 2, 1912. Mrs. Cassel was born at Wabash, Cass County, Nebraska, May 15, 1884. They have two children: Jean R., born October 15, 1913; and Donald Edwin, born August 23, 1915.

During the war Mr. Cassel was chairman of all loan drives at Palmyra. He served as president of the Crete Rotary Club, 1927-28. He is a member of Union Lodge Number 287 of the Masons at Palmyra; 32nd degree Scottish Rite of Lincoln; and Sesostris Temple of the Ancient and Arabic Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, of Lincoln. His favorite sport is golf. His hobbies are: birds; trees; and landscaping. He is a Republican. He is a member of the First Congregational Church of Crete. Residence: Crete.


David Cassell

For the past 46 years David Cassell has been highly successful as a farmer in Clay County, Nebraska. He was born at Morrison, Illinois, September 17, 1864, the son of James and Isabella (Maxwell) Cassell. His father, a farmer, was born at Dunkirk, Scotland, January 28, 1822, and died at Morrison, March 19, 1882. His mother was born at Dunkirk, September 28, 1828, and died at Ong, November 26, 1908.

Mr. Cassell is a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, and holds membership in the Nebraskana Society. He took an active part in Red Cross drives in Clay County during the World War. His political preference is the Republican party.

He married Maggie Alice Rowlison at Hoxie, Kansas, April 7, 1890. Mrs. Cassell, who was born at Kirksville, Missouri, January 29, 1868, is a descendant of the early American Putnam family. Her great-great-grandfather served in the Revolution, while her father was a Civil War soldier.

To this union the following children were born: Jessie, born February 19, 1891, who married William John Karnals; James, born April 11, 1892, who married Myrtle Florence Lindburg; Harry, born August 1, 1894, who married Emma Pauline Manning; Leonard, born March 18, 1897, who married Pearl Ruth Swanson; Gladys, born February 7, 1902; Leland, born December 28, 1904; Arthur, born April 14, 1907; Wayne, born December 17, 1909; Mildred, born May 22, 1912. James served in the World War with Company G, 355th Infantry, 89th Division. Leonard served at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. Residence: Ong..


Waldron Alvin Cassidy

Waidron A. Cassidy, leading physician of Omaha, was born at Shelby, Iowa, April 12, 1895. George Alvin Cassidy, his father, who was born at Rawdon Township, Montcalm, Quebec, September 4, 1859, is a physician. His ancestry is Scotch-Irish. He came to the United States in 1891. Bertha Amelia (Dixon) Cassidy, mother of Waldron A. Cassidy, was born at Pickering, Ontario, May 29, 1867. She was graduated from Alma College in Canada. Her ancestry is Scotch-Irish.

Dr. Cassidy was graduated from the Shelby High School in 1912, and in 1916, was awarded the A. B. degee (sic) at the University of Denver, at Denver, Colorado. He re-
